Will, not as long as Wilkie is in my van, he knows the fine art of food preparation and delivery. Secondly, I have to publicly commend Schnopps on his orange toss during the I5FF, not for the damage done (zero explosion) but for the beauty of an orange travelling at a velocity of 65mph, carving an arcuate path through the air only to bounce gently of the windshield because the target van was moving at 70mph which equals an orange impacting at only 5mph. Such elegance in the face of such destruction and high speeds.

Will, you sneaky bastard, you didn't tell us that you actually did 8.5km in that race just to meet your weekly mileage goal......and here I was thinking you just had a bad race.....I mean, that's devotion. Just think about it......wow....

made my bed this morning, paid visa, went to safeway, brushed my teeth, only drank one cup of coffee, brought my own lunch to school, mailed in my passport, attended most of my classes, went to the chiro, cleaned the kitchen, ran all repeats at practice, ice bathed.............................. almost back to my old self. anyways, have fun racing the fir tree open this weekend on your home course Klan... oh ya... there is a yet another UBC secret surprise that could really throw a stick in the spokes of the SFU women's wheels on their quest to win another xc title. (and Shane Carlos doesn't know what it is so he won't divulge shit Gant... so frigg off) ... BUT more to come after this recap... www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qqa3G0-qbmE&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fathletics%2Esfu%2Eca%2Fteams%2Fcross%5Fm%2Fnews%2Fvideorecap%5F%5Fsundodger%2F"first on the team was gant, followed by ____ (that newfie kid), wamboy(sic)... and the twins" well done sfu announcer... that's funny shit though, i like it.

My conversation with Carlos that led to his startling revelation went something like this: Shane: "Yeah, we got these secret weapons for Willamette...." (trails off) DGant: "Oh really? And you're not even going to tell me who they are?" Shane: "I don't even know, honestly...." (voice trails off again) DGant: (Already dropping the subject, 'cuz I didn't really care) "Whatever." Shane: "Okay, its Joren and Wilkie." DGant: "Thats it? " Not like I was going all Viet-Cong on his ass.

Don't listen to DGant boys, he's just trying to get us to turn on each other. A classic tactic. Anyway, thanks for the congrats, and good work to the Birds, Klan and Alumni over the weekend. While I remain optimistic, even with the new additions the Birds, it looks like they will really have their work cut out for them this year. With that said, there is tremendous depth on the team. Unfortunately that depth happens to be behind SFU's 5th at the moment but even if a couple of those guys can step up and some of these not so secret weapons live up to their billing then this matchup could become interesting. On the SFU side of things, the top 3 is very solid and will likely only get better with Wambui obviously having huge room for improvement, what happens with their their 4 and 5 will probably decide if this rivalry actually develops.
Oh and by the way, I know the name Mark Wilkie normally isn't very intimidating from September-December, but this is a new and improved Wilkie that will most definitely be turning some heads when he opens up.

For all you UBC dicks who passed on Pinetree today, you missed a barn-burner. Mark Bomba and Bruce Deacon showed up, and they hammered the first mile in like 4:40, with yours truly right on their heals. Heading up one of the hills, I surged, when suddenly this black bear comes rambling out of the bush!! That didn't faze me too much though, a simple Chuck Norris-esque round house kick to the chops took care of Smokey. That slowed me down a bit, but the pace picked back up when I was forced to out-run a rabid pit bull (whose ass-hole owner hadn't put on its leash) over the last half mile. So all in all pretty eventful, finished in 23:31, feeling fit. Oh, and said pit-bull nearly got Wambui and our Newfie (after I ran its legs off), but they killed it. Not quite as compassionate as I, those two.

.....the pit bull ate Deacon....his body is somehwere along 'lost lake' in 100m increments. After gant's 'roundhouse kick' i was mortified and dropped off the pace only to find this little poodle who proceeded to eat my shoes. I was able to finish, but had to pick the slivers out of my feet.....ahhhh cross country.....

you may have had to deal with bears, pit bulls, and mark bomba.
but i had to deal with a neglected child on the last beaver loop of our workout today down in the park... poor little guy never even saw it coming.

well if you woulda been at the run this morning you woulda gotten the full recap from the winner hisself.
and to all who failed to witness will's laws-of-physics-defying last-minute save-the-day manoeuvres to save a wayward toddler from a painful up-close introduction to the gravel of the beaver loop, i shall proceed to give my best effort to reconstruct the scene. it went as follows: one beautiful saturday morning, when the ubc men's cross country team was in the midst of carying out their weekly torching of the trails at none other than vancouver's very own stanley park, an innocent little toddler learned a very valuable early life lesson about avoiding large sweaty trash-talking spandex-wearing kiwis named will, especially when they're bearing down full-tilt on the last km repeat at 2:50 pace, wheels a-blazin'. anyway, on said repeat, one mark wilkie goes flying by the bench where this little munchkin and his mother are enjoying a nice family moment. excited by the commotion and possibly scared half out of his senses by the booming voice and maniacal laugh emenating from within the cloud of dust that had just gone whizzing by, the little guy (let's call him ike) jumps out randomly onto the trail, perhaps in hopes of getting a better glimpse of this spectacle. unbeknownst to ike, however, the aforementioned kiwi is hot on the heels of wilkie and, had he not saved the day by performing the stunning series of manoeuvres to be described forthwith, would have blasted poor ike halfway into beaver lake in a knee-on collision. thinking at light-speed (just a bit slower than he was running), will leaps into the air (with a slight twist of the head to the left and up to commence a smooth inverted mid-air rotation - good tip for all you aspiring pro snowboarders out there), while simultaneously reaching down with both arms to gently scoop up the unsuspecting ike and performing the splits (in mid-air, mind you). he then proceeded to complete a full 720 degree corked rotation, releasing little ike at about 630 degrees, depositing him safely in his mother's lap who all the time had remained riveted in awe on the trailside bench. his landing might have been a bit off, but then again he hasn't had too much time on the tramp to practice his inverts in the last couple weeks so i guess that's excusable (will you gotta come out to animal's gym sessions and work on those - you're looking pretty rusty). anyway i estimate he only lost .1 of a second or so on that last interval.

and the highlight of the season so far goes to:
wil...err, nope. Its a shocker, with freshman Mitch Culley taking the honours by a mile.
more on this story when/if gant decides to post any pics.

I do have to say, Mitch's efforts must be near the top of running spectales that I have witnessed with my own two eyes. I do not think that in the rest of my already well-progressed life I will witness such another inspiring performance. It truly was a sight to be seen; it was an honour to even be present to witness it.

Don't know why Bomba and Deacon are missing from those results, but Mark won in a little over 25:00, I think Bruce finished a little behind me and Wambui.
And now we know why Culley hasn't been killing it the last two races, like we know he can. Guy has been in serious Beer Mile training, evidenced by his superlative performance Saturday night, in what we hope will become the Annual SFU Beer Mile Challenge (we've even got a sweet trophy and everything). Pics to come, but the guy damn near broke 6:00. And this was a legit Mile of Beer, I made sure of that.

There is a direct correlation between stellar beer mile times and an inability to break 28 minutes in an 8k race.
It's science.

And to update our saturday workout.
It appears that the abrupt pace change and quick reaction of picking up 'ike' while running during that fateful beaver caused a slight tear in my medial meniscus.
See you dicks during track season.

Correction: There is a direct correlation between stellar beer mile times and an inability to break 28 minutes in an 8k race unless you are from the Okanagan. Then your beer miling and cross country abilities complement each other. But seriously, you guys really chose a great time of year to hold a beer mile......might as well do it right in the middle of all the important training, get it out of the way....you know, two birds with one stone, that kind of stuff....

Thats just how confident we are in our abilities. As for Will's "injury" (not to trivialize it if it is true), but I smell the faint but unmistakable stench of rotting halibut on the winds. I refer you to my first post on this thread.
