well boycey, i was going by otfa age groupings, but now i seem to remember that in 2007 boorsma and leeder raced junior, so you are indeed correct. nonetheless, he won't be racing. and ronb, tristan isn't skipping nationals to protest against the organizers, or becuase he doesn't want a chance to represent canada internationally. he just needs a break. multisport athletes can't run themselves down to hard, look at verzbicas in the usa, he has to pick and choose his races, and didn't even run track for his school last year. Yep, I get the multisport issue, and cross country running, and the periodization of the tri. gang's training and racing. Different people take it different ways though. Some of the elite tri. folks in Victoria have had their break, and are cranking up the training and low-key racing now. But a high school cross-country runner, who has had a summer Tri. season needs a break for sure. I never suggested that Tristan was skipping Nationals as a protest, of some sort. Just a flippant comment.

Wyatt Baiton will be top 6. He's running very well. Huge improvement from last year when he finished 24. Leakos and Baiton are 1 and 1 on head to head match ups this season.

The fields look great; looking forward to the team competitions. On the senior mens side, I've pulled out those with full teams entered - sorry if I missed any. My Q's are: -how strong are the Edmonton Thunder? -will Pieterson be running it twice? -will Speed River beat the rest of the field?

Genest is registered with another club for the remainder of 2009.
I'm planning on scoring the meet Overall for Junior/Senior Men/Women, similar to what Athletics Ontario does for their overall championships. If anyone wants to note 'training partners' such as Genest in the scoring, we can mention those other scores as a side note.

Notable teams for Junior Men:
-Physi-Kult (McGraw, Archer, Hinton, O'Sullivan, McGregor, Morgan...) -Windsor Legion (Smith, Mallete, Janikowski, Kowalski, Meloche...) -Huskies (DeGroot, Denault x2, Davenport...) -TOC (Kuternin, Shibley, Scheibelhut, Graham...) -Durham (Hosier, King, Esselink, Boychuck, Bierema...) -Tri City (Ikram x2, Shields, Belanger, McKay, Sandhu...)
That's just Ontario's...not too sure about out of province

BC Team should do well. Dylan Haight, Luc Bruchet, Justin Kent, Connor Clerke and Rowan Forsythe are all running well and should all place in the top 15.

Simon Whitfield is running national cross-country? Wow! How do you think he'll finish? It's pretty cool to have an Olympic gold and silver medallist competing at nationals.

He's done it before, I'm not sure if he's done it since, but he ran in 2006 when it was in Vancouver. Admittedly rough footing by the senior race due to the looped nature of the course and a few previous races, but he ran well. I'd suspect he'll be somewhat in the mix again 1. Simon Bairu 31:37. 2. Reid Coolsaet 31:52.0 3. Jerry Ziak 31:55.6 4. Cristiano Mauricio 32:04.4 5. Joel Bourgeois 32:11.2 6. Jeff Scull 32:13.7 7. Marcel Hewamudalige 32:15.5 8. Geoff Kerr 32:18.4 9. Simon Whitfield 32:23.4

I'm sure that's how it works in Triathlon as well....or maybe not... How does it work? TriCan takes a max of six juniors (age 16-19, 3 men, 3 women) to the World Championships. The trip is fully funded, and supported by coaches, staff and medical. There are sometimes funded camps (provincial or national) each year, and a small # of juniors raced on a development team at the World Team (Relay) Champs last year (also funded). World Champs for duathlon, off-road triathlon, aquathlon, non-drafting triathlon, etc. are not funded and not supported by HP staff. Similarly, athletes pay their own way to the PanAm champs, which was our main qualifier for Worlds last year (at least for junior and U23), although we do send coaches and staff to that race for co-ordination and support. So like most sports, there are a few training and racing opportunities that are funded and supported for a select group of athletes, but the bulk of the financial burden still rests with the individual. Hope this helps.

Tri guys, such as Whitfield and Jones, have had a break after their season, and are just building up. I think it is great for all of us, that they are putting it down at National Cross, but I'm guessing that if the Nationals/Trials were a couple of months later, they would be much more ready to go. And, they will probably be trying to do a pool workout earlier that morning. Please close the swimming pools in Guelph next weekend

Don't forget Chantell Widney, 4th place last year, Vancouver Sun Run winner this year, thoroughly beat Harvey last weekend at the Saucony Alberta champs, 2nd place in the Northlands 1 mile...

Weikum, obviously fit after his CIS result; Woytiuk, huge breakthrough summer on the roads and 4th place at the Saucony Alberta champs last weekend; Vollmer: retired but always fit and hugely talented; Torrance, always steady and reliable; Raudebaugh, surprise run at the Stewart Cup seems to indicate he has been training; McKay: Talented and fit. My predictions for the teams entered so far: 1. Speed River (obviously) 2. PIH (with a few big runs, this could be very close) 3. UTTC 4. Thunder 5. Boyd's Army 6. TOC 7. London Runner Should be exciting!

It will be interesting to see how our Chiba runners bounce back for Nationals. I think most, if not all, are entered for the 28th. Currently they are on the other side of the Pacific (that's a big Ocean off our West Coast, for you Central Canadians . Then racing on Monday in Japan, which is somewhere between very early Monday and very late Sunday in different parts of Canada. Then back across the ocean, and on to Guelph to race next Saturday. That is a lot of travelling, and a lot of time zones. I still think people can race very well, if they can figure out what time they are racing at...

How well does Reid recover off his 13:42 (+jet lag)? and how will a time like that translate to 10km XC? Looks like Jones and Whitfield have been hanging out with Al Sal and Bairu in Oregon. This workout makes me shudder to think about what kind of shape Bairu might be in right now. simonwhitfield.blogspot.com/2009/11/running-with-nike-crew.htmlRon, perhaps I missed it on another thread but I thought you would have been all over this video already!

Couple questions on the Speed River entry:
1. Dana Buchanan is listed on the OTFA membership as being a member of the Ottawa Lions (full year senior) so how can she be listed as part of the speed river team for national's xc?
2. How can Chris Winter be a member of BC athletics branch and be a member of Speed River? If your registered with a club in one province are you not automatically a member of that provincial body? Or vice versa?

Mario, that was just done at registration as I registered them at the same time as everyone else; rather than having to go through the entire process again for each of them.
Dana will be competing as a disassociated, not that it matters because we don't have a team in the senior women's race. Chris will be competing as an unattached BC athlete. Both are frustrated that they can't represent their club but alas this is the way the rules are structured; hopefully, we will see some change in these rules in the future.
