Hey Forum,
I've been having trouble with my Achilles tendon lately and was wondering whether or not I'd recovered enough to start running again.
I've had no worries just walking the dog or doing short windsprints up the stairs, but I still get a sharp pain when squeezing the sides with enough pressure.
I think it might be tendonosis but I'm not 100% sure. Any feedback you could give would be greatly appreciated.

To be honest, this sounds like the following: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanthoma"A xanthoma (or xanthomata or xanthomatosis) (from Greek xanthos, ξανθος, "yellow") is a deposition of yellowish cholesterol-rich material in tendons and other body parts in various disease states." In all likelihood, the Christmas season has blessed you with vast amounts of cholesterol-rich treats, and your overindulgence has led to this painful condition. I'd suggest limiting your aerobic activity to small oscillations of your torso, while keeping your lower body completely static, and cutting soft-boiled eggs out of your diet entirely. And as for your dog, I can only hope you feed him or her more thoughtfully than you feed yourself.

If it helps at all, I have a similar problem in that I always get that sharp pain when I apply pressure in the achilles, but I have never felt it during running or ever had a noticeable injury in the area. It might be good to go.
Why not give it a try and stop if you feel even the slightest hint of pain? I don't think you can really further injure it if you don't feel anything during the run, but I may be way off base there.

I had the same problem for years (Mine was brought on by flat feet, over-pronating, and weak muscles). Self massage man. Whenever I feel that tenderness coming on I just roll the crap out of my calves with a dough roller. It also helps to get in there with your hands and some muscle rub.

Hey again Forum,
So I ended up doing 10 minutes before the pain augmented to a point where I thought it would be wise to stop. Took yesterday completely off, partly because of my heel and partly because I had go to take my younger brother to his piano recital in Oshawa, a two and a half hour drive each way.
I figured I'd have another go later today but, in addition to the Achilles thing, I'm required to fast 16 hours leading up to dental surgery I'm having this afternoon to remove my wisdom teeth. Waking up this morning cotton-mouthed and cramping, I'm not really feeling all that up to it right now.
Figured I'd take the day completely off and tomorrow too to allow for post-surgical recovery. Wish me luck.

Dental surgery really can be a terrible experience. Although I myself have never had to undergoe a surgical procedure, even having teeth pulled alone has turned out to be more than i bargained for the next morning. After discovering it was impossible to follow my regular diet of jawbreakers, tostitos and other unfortunately hard foods I had to make a major change. So with the little experience I have I would suggest soft mushy foods such as apple sauce, yogurt, and tapioca pudding. Many of these not only taste terrific and dont result in excruciating pain to consume, but have the added bonus of boosting caloric intake to help the healing process and keep energy at a high. Get well soon.

Recovery time for this type of procedure is really personal; I was able to do a long run the day of my surgery! Just make sure you don't rush back into it too quickly, especially when you're dealing with an Achilles problem too. Have you scheduled an appointment with a doctor or physiotherapist?

Hey Forum,
Took Wednesday and Thursday off as suggested by the oral surgeon. Went out Friday thinking that the painkillers would not only help me take my mind off of my mouth, which has swelled to the point where I could be recruited to do a Christmas single with Alvin and the Chipmunks, but also off my Achilles which seems to be getting progressively worse the more I rest it.
Went out for 30 minutes around Fort Henry hill, mangling my ankles on sheets of ice and feeling really quite sorry for myself. Got back to the house with the taste of blood in my mouth and a searing pain that extended all the way up to my calf. So much for Runner's High.
Needless to say, I took today off.

What up Forum,
Sorry I've been in limbo for the past couple of days. Here's a little update:
Woke up Saturday with what I would describe as the worst hangover of my life. Not even 2 bottles of Restore Vitamin Water the night before could nullify the alcohol-induced aftermath. A quick glance over at the clock sealed the deal -- 3:30, this day was a write-off.
On Sunday I felt not quite good enough to run but that good enough to make me feel like I should do something. Decided I'd do some upper body at the gym so I can fly out of the last turn looking like a wild man. Unfortunately when trying to impress some girls with my lateral raises, I overexerted myself and dislocated my shoulder. I will be in a full arm cast for the 6-8 weeks.
Just sat around the house today, brooding over Entourage reruns and Rolo ice cream. At least the swelling in my cheeks is going down.

Howdy Forum,
Sorry I've been on the DL these past few days but I've just been laying low after Sunday's incident all the while making rigourous and extravagant New Year's preparations. Here's an update:
On Tuesday, we had a family gathering at our house. With 18 children running about, swinging from ceiling fans and whatnot, no one noticed Bernie, the family marmaset, flee the scene via the the chimney chute. Hey, it's a well-known fact they hate a racket, let alone a sextet cowbell orchestra. Anyway, it took three and a half hours to find him in our next door neighbour's recycling bin, clawing at at a Green Goodness Bolthouse smoothie container. What a relief that was.
On Wednesday, I reread this whole year's past Cyanide & Happiness comics. From there I picked my favourite 10 and presented them to my family at dinner. Needless to say, my mother was NOT impressed.
Tonight, I have planned a spectacle of epic proportions at our lakeside cottage but I'll wait until tomorrow to unveil it, just to see how it goes. Happy New Year's er'ryone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you need a permit to keep a marmaset as a pet?

I think you should run by feel. If you feel great, maybe that day you should push it a bit. On the other hand, if your not feeling well you might want to take a day off

I have but one word for you Forum : OMG
Sorry I couldn't update on Sunday, but the last 3 so days of my life go above and beyond what I could have expected them to be.
I guess I should start with New Year's Eve: got about around 10 as per uszh. Did some stretching and some core before hitting the shower. After a quick bowl of Shreddies; time to start drinking. I'm 4 deep before I realize I need to be partyproofing. Call up a few and head on over to the cottage for 2. We have a pretty sweet setup at our seaside estate, so providing I picked up a bompin playlist, this one would be one they would be talking about for years. My goal was clear: to set a new standard by which all other New Year's events, past, present, and future, would be compared.
I don't remember much after 11:00 but at last glance I'd say we had at least 300 drunken honeybees buzzing about. Did my public service for the evening when I moved a couple of lovebirds who'd passed out in the sauna to more comfortable quarters. Countdown to New Year's I can only liken to the last 100 metres of a mile race: White haze eating up my field of vision with a mild humming in my ears. Good analogy, I'll have to remember that one.
What happens next is not my story to tell for I remember very little of it. I vaguely recollect getting into a cab for reasons I now know not but if I were to guess, I'd say I was chasing tail. Having already had 3 kills that evening, I guess you could say I just got greedy. But when I awoke the next morning God-knows-where, I had a little more on my mind than the post-New Year's hangover.
Shortly thereafter, I was promptly greeted by my gracious host and a BLT. Complimenting my drunken self for his good judgment, I quicly struck up a conversation to find out just where the hell I was. Turns out that sometime over the course of the night, I had thought it wise to travel to Arnprior, a good 2 hours outside Kingston. Ugh.
Called my folks to let them know where I was. My cell was zapped so I just used the landline and left a message. Apparently my parents had had as rough a night as I. Went out to lunch at this quaint little coffee shop, all the while brainstorming as to how the hell I was going to get home...

G'day Forum,
When we last left our hero, he was stranded in a small coffeeshop in Arnprior with the task of getting home before his parents suspected any fishy business. There was also the small detail of attending to the unmanned cottage, but he didn't even want to think about that at the moment...
When I returned to first-person perspective, I reasoned that the easiest and most affordable way to get back home was by bus. So I hop on the Greyhound website and check out the bus schedule. FML, the last chance bus from Arnprior to Kingston leaves in 25 minutes. Luckily my new friend Annika offers to drive me to the bus station.
This was my first big mistake. Not only did Annika later tell me she's not the best driver sober, but that she's such a lightweight that she was still buzzing from last night. So, sure enough, 10 minutes to departure time and we rear end some fellow who resembles Jon Voight so much so that so all intents and purposes, I will refer to him as Jon Voight. Jon Voight calls the cops.
Not gonna lie, I considered ditching the girl and bolting to the bus. Sad part is even if it hadn't been my first run in over a week, I still wouldn't've made it. Not to mention the risk of a prison sentence. So I decided to sit tight for now. Hey it's not like I was driving or anything.
When Annika's BAC was above the legal limit, we both lost our heads. Needless to say, I won't be getting a call back from her anytime soon. So here she is, balling her eyes out and here I am, looking like a dope trying to console her, all the while thinking, "How in the world am I gonna get home now?" I know, I'm a terrible person.
So I plead with the cops, insisting that they "help a brotha out" or something along those lines. I dunno, I was still a bit drunk myself. But they cave, and offer me a lift back to Ottawa. Great I can grab a train, a bit more pricey but still well worth the money.
Get to the station exhausted but with plenty of time to spare. Not in the mood for taking chances, so I don't bother to grab a coffee before boarding the train. This is my big second mistake. I didn't miss my stop but I was close enough to doing so that when I awoke, I was in such a frenzy to get off that I left my $200 coat that I got for Christmas on board the train. I soon became aware of my blunder when I stepped outside into -12 C and flurries.
Called a cab and get back to my house just around dinner time. Hypothermia has taken its toll on my now blue lips, but my mom is more concerned with tracking down my new coat. I'll have to tend to the cottage tomorrow.
Call up a few and we head on over to the cottage. I find a pigsty in its place. At least major was stolen or broken, all thanks to a few good friends who kept the place under control when I went missing into the night. It literally took 5 hours to get the whole thing cleaned, and even then the lingering of alcohol filled the air. Hopefully it settles before we come back up next weekend.
Get back to the house and decide to finally do that run. 30 minutes pain free -- things are finally starting to go my way. Take the next 2 days off to celebrate my good fortune with sugar pie and Modern Warfare 2.
Peace.

For what it's worth, I did my best to keep things under control. Back at the cottage, after dis broad found out I had a prehensile tail, I sobered up pretty quick and tried to keep the lid on the rapidly escalating cookie jar. I prevented a team of inebriated miscreants from sailing off with our speedboat, but it was one monkey against over three hundred revellers, and I was overwhelmed pretty quick. That being said, I threw twelve miles today, and felt sensational.

Are you writing a novel or something? Obviously the man is just documenting the struggles he must overcome to get a decent run in these days. Surely we can all relate to the difficult task of stringing together several solid days of training. As limestonemiler indicates, this is even more difficult for those of us whose live's are a bit more surreal than others. Keep us enlightened, limestonemiler. I find the perseverance which you demonstrate very invigorating.

Goten Tag Forum,
Just practicing for my German quiz tomorrow. Seriously, who gives marked assignments first week back?
Went back to school on Tuesday, Monday was a snow day. At least I thought it should've been. I don't actually know what the board officially decided, but I think I'm responsible enough to make my own decisions thank you very much.
I'm really starting to tire of this place. Think I have senioritis even though I haven't been accepted anywhere yet. To make matters worse, my first class of the day is Physics and we're scheduled to review Simple Harmonic Motion. I seriously have the most random timetable imaginable -- Physics, Nutrition, German and Bio.
After school, I head over to the GoodLife for a lil run on the tready. Membership is expensive there but it's worth it for the scenery. Do 20 minutes before ack! Calf cramp. Hate breaking in new shoes.
Woke up today promising to myself, come hell or high water, that I would run 40 minutes. At this point, that's about the extent which my fitness can carry me. I know, it's depressing. Anyways, as I'm about to head out the door something catches my eye. Aw yeah, pilates in the gym! I reason that maybe I'm getting injured so much is because I'm just not that flexible. So I hit that up and go for a quick 15 afterwards just to feel a burn.
Figure I'll run home now, good for a quick 5, then run over to swim practice in another couple hours. With my dislocated shoulder I have to do kick the whole time, which is basically just as good running 30 maybe even 40 minutes. Yah, that'll work.
In terms of updates, I'll try and turn something out on a daily basis but don't quote me on that or anything. I'm a very busy guy, as this dairy suggests, so if I miss a day it probably just means I'll have quite an update for you the next day.

Hello there Boys and Girls,
Not much to report on today. German test went over pretty well, I was a fan of the format. Basically for Part A we had to fill in the blanks to a conversation two Germs (that's what you call people from Germany right?) were having and for Part B it was a Q&A. I guess the teacher figured he would try to get to know us a little better now, two weeks before end of the semester. What a phony.
For Bio we do our first dissection of the year starting Monday. So today we prepped by going over to the anatomy museum at Queen's. I don't know whose idea that one was; the only specimens there were of human body parts and I don't think come Monday I'll be ripping the cover off a cadaver.
Ran 40 minutes today. It's been so long since I ran that much that I forgot how boring running can get at times, especially when you're inside. It was pretty much a blizzard outside, but that's not the reason I went to the gym. Running outside, regardless of the weather, is 1000x better than running inside IMO. No the reason I ran inside is because I didn't want to fall and royally mess up my arm. Seems kind of obvious when you think about it.
Went home, did some Physics (soooo many worksheet problems left unsolved) and watched the Blackhawks game. Damn, they're so feisty. I called them in September for the Cup and to this day I'm sticking with my men. I've already put in an order in for a Toews jersey when playoffs roll around.

To whom it may concern,
It’s finally Friday and I couldn’t be more thankful. The first week of something new, whether it be school, training, or whatever, is always the biggest system shock and it definitely takes a toll on the body.
When you get into funks like this, days, weeks, even months seem to pass you by, dispassionately and monotonously. For this reason, I am a strong advocate of taking breaks from your regularly scheduled commitments in order to keep your mind wiry and to avoid burnout. This is why I never run more than 3 days in a row, in the off-season anyways. When summer rolls around it’s a bit of a different story.
On these down days, I always try to get up to something crazy to hold me over for the next couple days. So tonight, I’ll be trayboozanning down Fort Henry hill with some university friends. Those guys are always sauced which I’m pretty sure is necessary in order to get through with your sanity in tact.
I dunno, I’m bound to find out sooner or later. University apps are due by the end of the month. FML.

I believe we're comfortable enough now with each other that I'll just skip the formal greeting and get right into it,
I get back to the house, noticeably shaken up. My mother is there and greets me at the door, " Hello dear, where'd you go today?" As she approaches, she is quick to add, "I'm assuming through a patch of burrs? And what's with the smell!?"
I guess I should go back a ways. I wasn't even in Kingston today. I was up at the cottage, like I told you in my New Year's post. Turns out the place got cleaned up well enough that my parents didn't even give it a second thought. Good thing they don'd read TnF. At least, I HOPE they don't. Gosh, wouldn't that be embarrassing, especially with what I'm about to tell you.
Anyways, I didn't have that bad a hangover so I decided I might as well try to do a long run. And that right now for me is an hour. I don't run a lot at my cottage, but I figured I couldn't get too lost especially since there's only one or two roads and all.
Anyways, at 30 minutes I was in the middle of a forest with no idea where I had come from or where I was going. Bad call taking that side road a while back. So, like history's greatest heroes did when they encountered troubles; Gandhi, Martin Luther King, the Little Train That Could; I pressed on.
At some point in the run, I couldn't bear the bowel movements any longer and had to stop. No TP so I had to make due with snowballs. They simply froze to my bottom, at least it felt like they did. Shoot. Oh well, I'm not going to find my way back just standing here.
It was at my second pit stop that I realized two things: 1) don't order the Meatball sub at Subway before a run, let alone a long one, and 2) I was covered in burrs. What's worse is that it was too cold out to remove my gloves and pick them off. Not to mention I didn't trust my gloves after the first pitstop. So I ran on, and they picked at my body everywhere: my arms, my legs, my core. I would later find about a dozen rashes all over these various parts of my body but nothing I could do about it now. I already had enough to deal with...
At about 96 minutes, I found a road I recognized and headed for home. My foot had blistered about 20 minutes prior but it was really starting to sting now. What's worse was the exhaustion; I had just eclipsed my longest run ever (95 minutes and 52 seconds) but I still had leftovers. I imagine what I was feeling a bit was a bit like a marathoner in their last 2 miles. Minus of course the goodies that come at the end of a marathon. All I had to look forward to was a 10-page Bio paper due Friday that I have yet to start. No time to think about that now though, just focus on getting home.
After 122 minutes and 30 seconds, I was about 4 minutes from home and had considerable discomfort in my lower extremity. This was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. And I was in cottage country now, nowhere to pull over and stop to relieve myself. So I did what any runner would sensibly do and emptied the contents of my lower intestines into my Sugoi tights. Thank God they were black. I don't need to go into anymore detail than that I figure, but I figured that was as good a place as any to draw the line. I stopped the watch and walked the rest.
Prolly recovering tomorrow, not sure though whether more mentally or physically. Plus I figure I better get started on the Bio thing. Just don't expect any Pulitzer worthy material in tomorrow's update. I hear they don't give out any awards to crap anywho.
