The Canadian Team competing in the Chiba International Road Relay in Japan has been selected, and presumably will be announced soon. The race takes place Monday, November 23rd, and is a mixed race with 3 men running legs of 10K., 10K., and 5K., and 3 women running legs of 5K., 5K., and 7.2K., or whatever the exact distance is to complete the marathon distance. Apparently 2 alternates may be selected as well.

Very unofficial running order for our team. Reid Coolsaet (5K), Megan Metcalfe(5K), Richard Mosley(10K), Chantell Widney(5K), Dylan Wykes(10K), Marilyn Arsenault(7.195K). And if that holds up, then our alternates Steve Osaduik and Denise Robson will be racing a 5K on the track, as the relay goes on... Go team !!!

What's the funding arrangement for this, out of curiosity? The Ekiden normally pays for the other countries to attend, I am pretty sure this does not cost AC anything but there are others who can correct me if I am wrong here.

Correct, HHH. The Japanese pay the whole shot-- meaning that the Japanese actually fund more travel for Canadian distance runners than AC does in a typical year!
And here's one for the annals of AC outrages: The Chiba race used to pay only appearance money (on top of covering all expenses), rather than prize money. The year that I went, our coaches were given $1500US in cash per athlete, which they were presumably meant to pass on to athletes. However, on strict instructions from AC-- who let's recall, paid NONE of our expenses-- our coaches passed on only $250 to each athlete and held onto the rest to return to AC. I don't know where this money--13,500USD, or closer to 20k Canadian at the time--eventually went; but, what I DO know is that it did not go to help pay for SOME OF THESE SAME ATHLETES to go to WXC some four months later! I subsequently qualified for 2 or 3 more of these teams but refused to go unless the team was paid the full sum of the appearance money allotted to them. AC recognized the principle involved when it upped the athlete's portion to something like $500, but it would not surrender the full amount, and so I never went again (I couldn't afford to take a week off work and leave my family in the lurch for the 7-8 days required, and, I was outraged by AC's audacity). The only defense of this practice that I ever heard from f AC at the time was that "most other federations keep ALL the money"-- yet another example of AC holding itself to a different standard than the one to which it consistently holds athletes.
In an interesting aside, two years before I went, the Aussie athletes, led by Steve Monaghetti, threatened to boycott the race after arriving and finding out that their federation planned to keep all the appearance money. The Aussie federation sent a message to the team staff that any athlete refusing to run would not be selected to participate in the Olympics the following year! The Aussies subsequently ran-- and actually won, on the strength of Monaghetti's record-breaking anchor leg-- a strange kind of protest, admittedly, but it shows that athletes will demonstrate integrity and professionalism even when their federations do not.

For those interested in watching/tracking the race, this info was also provided: Apparently you can follow a webcast at japanrunningnews.blogspot.com/2007/01/watching-japanese-race-broadcasts.html. The results will likely be up at that site japanrunningnews.blogspot.com/ shortly after the race. The race goes Monday in Japan at 1:07pm which is 9:07pm Sunday here by my calculation (they are 16 hrs ahead of us). A link to make the process a _tad_ easier...you can grab the KeyHoldTV software (which is free) here: www.v2p.jp/video/Viewer/ The race is on the Fuji TV station at 9:07pm PST (12:07am EST). To figure out what that channel is in the software (is it's all Japanese characters, I used Google Translate: translate.google.com/#en|ja|FUJITV. It matched up to "WATCH 231" in the Mac OS X player, but I'm not sure if that changes or not. I should also note...if you click on a channel, the English name will show. Hope that helps.

Reid's list is probably taken from a couple of weeks old list that was provided to the Japanese. There has been a few changes since then.

Nikki Chaple of Australia out front but Yuriko Kobayashi of Japan seems to be closing. Metcalf seems to have slipped back but not sure.
