As every runner has experienced, it's not always easy getting out the door for a long run or a hard session of intervals. While we all know that hard work brings rewards; on these difficult, unmotivated days, what gets you out the door? For myself I think of past performances or hard workouts completed and that usually gets me fired up for a few more miles.....any thoughts?

Mine is knowing that my competition probably isnt wimping out. They're going out no matter what, rain or shine. So I can't let them get an advantage over me. That's what drives me.

Come on I run my ass off, but I still look like I could dominate the WNFL!
I run because I like beating guys who look like anorexic distance runners. Remember I'm not only only the President but also a member!

Even if for a moment I think that I might have run the best workout/race I have run and will run, I always end up telling myself that I can still improve. I usually dont focus on where I stand compared to other people because in the end it will just end up being me reflecting on how fast I ran- not how fast some other person ran (unless i set a world record). Instead, I seek out TEXT in beating my previous workout or race time and setting a higher personal standard.
So far I've kept coming back for more.

In last reply to this topic, where it says "seek out TEXT.." it should say "seek out motivation..."-for some reason it got messed up.

Good topic, I always wonder what makes us do what we do when we're not always naturally inclined to do it. For myself, I often think of the great runners we have in Canada and N. America. They're great in my eyes, yet they seem more 'catchable' than say a Kenyan or Ethiopian. A 28 or 29 minute 10k still does not seem out of the reach of those who work for it, so I think that just putting the time in and having a long-term outlook helps. It's this thought of the long-term big picture that keeps me going on those tough days. A 26:20 just seems in-human. How do they do it?

i don't know what motivates us mortals, but for the likes of the ben johnsons, jesse owens, and ryan mackenzies of the world, its to get in that big race with a horse.

Man, I'm glad I registered my name. I wouldn't want to be associated with the glut of fake HHH's that seems to be coming out of the woodwork (like the last guy).
To quote a great man -- "my motivation this year is to beat all you f---ers". That's all I need.
