Upon looking at the standards for the National Youth Championships (Legions) it uses the "new" distances for those born 1995 or later. I actually like the distances for many reasons, but I question the accessability of these events. I haven't been able to find any meets that offer distances such as the 300, 1200 or 2000. Indoor performances will not be accepted. Even the minor meets that have information posted seem to have the traditional distances. Anybody out there with any ideas? www.ottawalions.com/legion/docs/2010%20Youth%20Entry%20Standards%20&%20Technical%20Info.pdfJeff Haller

Unless there is an all-comers meet with these new race distances, I guess the only way to compete in these events (and make standard) is through the district qualifier meet held in your region.

As a throws coach I am a little astounded. My confusion comes with the comparison of the Youth and Junior National Standards for women.
Disc is 1.20m difference from youth to junior, Hammer is 1.00m difference, and Javelin is 1.00m difference.
When comparing the junior standards to the 2009 national senior standard, there is a 14.00m difference for Hammer, a 7.80m difference for Disc, and a 5.00m difference for Javelin.
Just found it strange and interesting.

The trouble that remains is that meet information for our district is yet to be posted. I just find it odd that these distances are supposed to be the direction we're heading but there is no avenue to compete at these distances. The AO meet is there, but we're also encouraged to provide performance times when entering that meet. If the minor meets aren't going to buy in, who will? Jeff

If there's enough interest, I'll add some 1200m and 2000m in London. Let me know if your club wants to see these additions.
Were there any announcements regarding the drastic changes in Youth (and Junior) National standards for 2010?

I'm assuming Supermeet 1 will hold events at these new distances. If so, then qualification times will have to come from the Legion district meet or maybe Roman will allow conversions from other event distances.
As for the Legion meet in your district, you'd best get in touch with the Ontario Command to find out where and when it will be held. We had the same problem in our district for years, not knowing where and when the meet would take place, only to be told that the information was posted on the Legion website. It can be a byzantine process at times.

Thanks Tim and Steve, I was anticipating the distance changes at the meet, but wasn't really anticipating the difficulty in finding the meets. I've searched the Legion website to no avail so I've taken your advice Tim and e-mailed the contact I could find. The Supermeet will obviously be the focus of our season anyways but I'm hoping (as most people I'm sure would) to know roughly how many athletes I'd be taking to Ottawa beforehand for the sake of planning. That being said, Steve I'd be more than happy to take you up on the offer to possibly add those events. Our own meet here (and your July 2nd race) unfortunately don't fit well as some of my athletes anticipate racing at OFSAA that week. We'll be in touch!

Your Provincial organization should be on board with Canada's LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) Plan. Race distances and specs for throws and hurdles have been adjusted based on the identified developmental needs of younger athletes. You could also contact Athletics Canada and see if they can give you some direction. Last year in Alberta I had athletes who competed in the "new" events as well as the traditional ones depending on the meet. All of them prefer the new events. One cool aspect was that they could run the 1200m at the same time as world class athletes run he 1500m

If the changes are to accomodate more athletes, or at least younger ones, then why is there no hammer throw for the 16U?

whatsyourmiletime, bad grammar and spelling just makes you look unintelligent, and makes people take the possibly useful information you have to offer, less seriously.
