Not super fast-- but definitely my favorite half marathon. A not too big- not too small race that has a good quality field and is usually a good opener for the spring-summer season. 5 weeks prior to Ottawa is about as close as you want to get.

Another absolute thrashing of the field by Loiselle. Here's hoping he can put it together for a full.

Will the Oz ever get his Mojo going East of Abbotsford? He is like 2 different runners depending on where the race is (not that 66 is a bad time-- just that he runs SO much better on the WC).

Nice pbs by "journeymen" Chiasson and Mercier-- both coached by Oldster (pun intended).

Mercier is a 35 year old former hockey player who works full time and has kids. 68 mins was a huge pb for him. Pretty sure he has only stepped up from weekend warrior type training the last 2-3 years. He should be an inspiration to us all!

Come on Matt I'm doing my best here, I pulled a hammy 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to train much, I am happy with the race considering.
The hammy feels good now so we'll see if that theory is solid after I line up on the start lone in Ottawa:)-

I am duly stoked for my peeps today (Emily is a long time P-Ker too). Chris' run is massive. That's three P.B.s out of three races for him (15k, 5k, and now Half). And R.C. continues to exemplify what's possible when the bull is taken by the horns (2.5 years ago he couldn't run 5k at that pace). Not to jinx him, but he will kill it in Vancouver in a couple of weeks.

BTW, what's the story on Mary Davies? Never even heard of her (could be I'M out of touch!), and she's just up in Ottawa. Looks like she ran away and hid in this one.

the times being slow is probably due to the cold rain which started falling 10km into the race, added to a few stretches of wind. Slowed me a couple of minutes from my usual half thon time.

Thanks. (Guess I could have googled too.) Davies is a Kiwi. , making E.T. the CDN champ (big negative split/P.B. win for her + selection to China).

As for the times, that course is obviously not a scorcher-- lots of good people running it over the years and very few P.B's (making Tara Q's run there last year all the more impressive.)

some lil shit threw water in my face as we ran by the water station, not to mention some volunteers led us the wrong way twice...now that will slow you down haha. Guess I should become better at reading maps though. oh and some Algerian guy elbowing you, cutting you off and horking up spit every 3 seconds was fun...Reejean will attest to what I am talking about here haha. The course was flat as a pancake, though it was very muddy at sections due to construction. ps. Osiduk looked strong and just ran with the pack until he broke away at around 3-k to go. Also Rejean ran like a possessed man. Waita run guys! anyways Ill complain some more on my blog later Hortian out!

It's not impossible to PB on this course (mine was on this course and I was close again last year), but all the turns, changes of surface and omni-present wind are a factor. My best guess is it's slow by 30-60 seconds in "typical" wind conditions. This year it struck me as being less windy than the past two years, but it also rained almost the whole race. Temperatures were decent for racing (if a little cold), but the road was sure wet, and there were a number of muddy spots and big puddles to dodge.

I was watching at the 16.5k split mat and was surprised to see Matt Loiselle so far in front. The next two guys were each well back, followed by a pack of four that included Rejean and Osadiuk (and I guess Hortian, although I don't know him and wouldn't recognize him).

I didn't recognize the lead lady, so I'm flabbergasted to discover she's "from" Ottawa. Nice to see a good strong run on this course from Emily, as unless I'm mistaken, she's had trouble here the last couple of years.

Not much depth up front this year. I haven't been paying close attention... was this race not the National champs this year? Where were Mr. and Mrs. Smith?

I should also add, Marilyn Arseneault must have faded badly over the last 5k, unless another woman in front of her dropped out. When Emily ran by at 16.5k, she was followed by two ladies roughly 10 and 20 seconds back. I wouldn't recognize Marilyn, so I couldn't say for sure that's what happened. ***EDIT - Doh! The 16.5k splits are right there in the results. So it looks like she did fade qute a bit over the last 5k.
