Apart from resting it, any advice on speeding the recovery of a hamstring that, out of the blue, has decided to spasm and lock up. Happens right in the belly of the muscle Some easy stretching, and careful curls seem to help. After a week off, it still won't let me run. Thanks.

Alot of hamstrings actually cramp because of what is happening in the Lumbar area of the back. I have had "hamstring" problems only to discover that I am jammed up in that back region and need some aggressive physio/adjustments to my spine and soft tissue on the low back. Some people with herniated disks etc also never feel the back but are symptomatic in the hammy. I would recommend seeing a good physio who can do spinal manipulations and see if that helps. It can take some patience too. Good luck.

Also, get it diagnosed to see if it's a spasm or a strain. If it's a spasm, massaging it will help. However it might be a slight strain, in which case there will be inflammation or scar tissue in the muscle. In that case it needs to be treated by a physio then brought back to full strength and range of motion before you resume regular training.

Yes the lower back on the same side has been sore for a while before this cropped up. Thanks for the suggestions. I guess my body might not be as supple as it was a few decades ago. I can do some pretty strong cycling though, so that helps the fitness a little.
