Bazan Bay is a little Bay on the ocean, in Sidney, B.C., just a few minutes north of Victoria (in the area of the airport and the ferry terminal to the mainland). The 5K is fairly flat, a few sharp turns, and subject to possible winds along the waterfront. The race started at 9:00 am, and it was cool overnight, so I imagine it was about 5 degrees at start time. I would be interested to hear from anyone who was there, as to the conditions. The results are posted on the Prairie Inn website, right up near the top of the home page. Someone will link them to here, I am sure. In the meantime, triathletes took the top 5 positions overall, and had many other of the top finishes, both men and women. Simon won in 14:36, 2 seconds of Kyle Jones. One of our posters, AP, had a solid run in third in 14:57. Triathlete Magali Tisseyre was the first female in a very good 17:03, the great and seemingly ageless Lucy Smith was 2nd in 17:19, and an excellent junior triathlete Christine Ridenour was 3rd in 17:45. A great day for the triathletes, but, where have all the runners gone?

Damn, I meant to add that our missing "Hero", Darren Skuja, who I haven't from in much too long, ran a very nice 17:49. Nice going, Skuj...

Anyone have top 10 results from Harry's? (Sounds like it may have been an exciting finish, but the results link doesn't work.)

The runners were in Vancouver running Harry's 8 km (-; Hey "subfour" - yes, I know that many good runners were going at it, in Harry's 8K today. Not being able to access the results yet, I would suggest that the way guys like Whitfield and Jones, and gals such as Tisseyre and Smith, ran today, that most of the runners would be relegated to chasing Tri Asses... And, as I recall the regime, the Race today would be about their 8th session in the last 3 days, just to see how fast they can run, when tired. Anyways, they are all great athletes... Cheers !

Yeah, I saw that, plus the pic, on the Runner's Choice website. I was just wondering if anyone knew times, or where the other guys (Mosley? Brown?) were.

Hey Ron, not to be to confrontational but look around a little. Track season is just around the corner. In addition, the University boys have been laying it down over the past couple of month in indoor at all three BC universities. A great young crop of talent. Dylan Height and Luc Bruchet just ran at NACAC and are heading to World XC. Its nice to see the Tri athletes posting some fine times but they aren't that good. You don't have to look to far to see that BC's running community is still going strong. Pockets of talent are still around and growing.

Hey Scott - nice to hear from you, and hope you're doing well. Confrontation is the norm here, so no problem. And I don't find most of what you say very confrontational at all... And you know that I know the University athletes are still in season, and are running well. Also, as pointed out, many good runners were racing the 8K in Vancouver. But is it as bit unusual to see multi-sport athletes taking the first 5 finishes and the top 3 women are also multi-sport athletes. If you don't think Whitfield is a good runner, then you obviously haven't been at workouts with him, and/or coached athletes who have raced against him. He is a damn fine runner, and he has been predicting for a couple of years that Kyle Jones would be the next big runner in Canadian Tri. Looks like that is taking place. Oh, and it's Dylan Haight by the way - can't mispell a good Island boy

Nice to hear from you too Ron. Mispelled Dylan's name, oops. I thought I better clear up any possible issue pertaining to Simon. I never said anything like you posted. I actually said the opposite. Fine times posted were my words but when times like 13:30 don't get you very far on the world seen I think I am correct in saying they are not that fast. Any top Tri athlete has to be a strong runner these days. I was at National XC and saw Simon run a fine race. Running is not his sole concern and in the end the energy needed for the other two diciplines does detract from his potential running performances. As good a runner as he is or even could be is still not good enough to put him on the podium on the world seen. The three combined events does make Simon world class. He doesn't need to hear it from me but I think he made the right sports choice in choosing the Tri over just running....

Problems with what you had to say scott 1) it is a local ROAD race, not a golden league 2)Its March, nobody (minus a few CIS guys) are peaked 3)Like you said he is a triathlete and therefore should not have to have the same speed as a 5k guy 4) He's in his mid 30's I think 14 mid under these circumstances is incredibly impressive.

What's not to like about being an Olympic Gold Medallist (and a Silver), being able to train full time and enjoy it, be a millionare or so at a young age, etc, etc... All of that, though, is not defining what might/could have happened if he had chosen running only, and pursued it with the same talent and drive and ambition that he has done in Tri. Some of the workouts I have been at with him could only be done by a few other runners that I have seen, and they could all run under 13:30 for 5K., and he wasn't peaked, shaved, or tapered for these workouts - they were in the midst of big volume weeks of running and swimming and biking. Personally, my mind boggles at what Simon may have run for 5K or 10K, if that was his sport...By the way, when he shows up runs top 10 or whatever at National Cross Country in November, that is his off season - he's just jogging and recovering from a Tri Peak a month or so earlier...

Sorry to jump in boys. Ron, I agree with many of your points and they are mostly correct. Simon finishing top 10 at National XC is impressive but I believe if you lined up all of the best Canadian runners A-Z he would be lucky to finish top 25. It is also his high level of mental toughness that makes him a good runner. He can push through the pain like no one else.
When it comes to where have all the runners gone?
They have become bankers, accountants, entrepreneurs, police officers, firemen, and teachers.
The Lower Mainland is lacking high performance coaches that would take a middle or long distance athlete to the international level. There are some people who have been coaching out here a long time and it has indeed been a long time since they have produced anyone of international class. They get a regular fresh crop of athletes year after year who do little beyond decent local times.
I dont think its lack of talent but more lack of support/guidance?

To the point of Whitfield not being in the top 25 nationally, if everyone, absolutely everyone in the country lined up sounds about right. However, he probably runs half or less the mileage than the top ....I dunno...100 or 200...as a tri guy I think - maybe Ron knows for sure - his mileage is like 60 miles per-week.
So where have all the runners gone? I don't think they are ALL gone to the pasture working, although I am sure many have, how about you take all the triathletes in the country and line them up A - Z and train them properly exclusively as runners. Some of - probably a fair few enjoy the lucrative sport of triathlon and would be top-level Canadian runners.
Interesting comment about the leadership/guidance thing.

I have recently jumped into the coaching arena to give something back to this sport I love. Time will tell if it makes any impact. Any interest in taking on one of the fading torches and building the next generation of runners, Hayden?

The lack of proper support seems to me to be the issue. There are too many coaches who have no training but believe they can coach because they ran high school and possibly some university track. This isn't to say that these people can't learn to be a coach but often the willingness to learn is not there and they make decisions like peaking an athlete for a meet that does not matter (provincial club championships comes to mind). Its always nice to see someone kill a qualifier (that they would have done well in anyway) then move to the next race and do terribly. Too much of this is happening. It can be kids that say they want to peak for said qualifying race but its the coaches job to tell them and train them to peak at a race that actually matters.
Sorry about the rant, I have seen many kids have this happen and it bothers me to see potential not being reached.

If Hayden is talking about people who have decided to use the (invalid)excuse that people have to work for a living, we are not talking about kids. If we are not talking about kids and you want it bad enough, you will find the coaching.

Coward you are an idiot. I held a Canadian record, won gold at Nationals, raced at Nationals for 15 years straight, rabbited Eamon Coglin, Sydney Marie, John Walker and a host of other top World milers. I trained under one of the best for 16 years and along side, Paul William, Simon Hoogewerf, Ian Newhouse, Ian Gillespie, Al Klassen, Doug Consiglio, Graham Hood, Dave Campbell, Graham Fell ..... Even though I did not break 3:51 in the 1500 or 1:50 in the 800m they are still substantial times that have stood the test of time. I am more than qualified to coach kids to the top level. I did it for decades and just because I didn't make it, myself, does not mean I don't have the wealth of knowledge to take athletes there. Don't mistake my lack of a little talent for lack of knowledge. I will peak my athletes where I feel they will benefit things most. You don't have to question anything I do for my kids. And yes, it was directed my way and fucks like you are the reason people like me don't put the effort back into this sport. Maybe you should make sure your name stays anonymous.

Coward, As you have directed your rant at me I will state for the record that making the BC Junior team as a Juvenile was not a guarantee for Justin! Not making this team and not racing Nationals would have been a big failure to the year. Racing and winning BC High Schools was also on the horizon but Connor had other plans for Justin. If you saw the race you would have to agree, Justin ran a good race but Connor ran tough and took him at the end. These things happen. It was a game plan that did not pan out. They are 17 and have many years ahead of them. Next year the Nationals Xc will be the goal. Getting there should not be in question. There was absolutely no reason to think Justin would coast onto the BC team this year. In addition, the Fraser Valley Championships were only three days before BC Clubs. The program I have my athletes on is well thought out. Each of my athletes has met with me and their individual goals have been mapped. Right or wrong there goals have been projected a year in advance. You know nothing about me or my coaching abilities. I welcome you to put your wealth of knowledge to more than your TNF texting.

Scott,
I guess many club coaches in Canada find themselves in their roles because their kids are running. I did have the opportunity of coaching an outstanding athlete and person- Graeme wells for 2 years. While most of the ground work was already done for him he did manage to improve his 1500 by 4 secs to 339 and his 800 to 147 and run 358. There are many reasons why Graeme decided not to continue to the next level and some of it im sure was lack of recognition and support. For 2 years he was the top miler in BC and second only in the 800 to Gary. He applied several times and never received any support from AC and little from our club and BCA. With proper funding and support Im confident Graeme would have made it to the next step- but somethings gotta give sooner or later. We were lucky growing up having an awesome group of rediculously talented kids eager to run for a coach who put his own career aside for us.

Wow, there are lots of interesting sub-threads, within this thread. As I mentioned, I am in the midst of moving, so don't have quite enough time to do this stuff full justice, but I will soon. In the interim, a) Great to hear from you, Ryan, what are you up to, and why don't we hear from you more often? b) I have some fundamental agreements with your perception that something(s) has gone terribly wrong with high performance distance coaching in British Columbia. And I will address that situation in the near future. c) You are way off base on Whitfield and his running abillity/potential. Again, I ask for a little more time to develop my assertions on this issue. Soon...

Wow just read ScottKent's reply to Coward. Coward's post also didn't seem directed at anyone to me but there seems to be something underneath that. I.e why does Scott start commenting completely unrelated about Justin... and a situation which many would not have known about including possibly coward. That alludes to a deeper plot. I don't know why I am writing this just seems like an interesting public mystery to me.

Who knows what you mean by "latest thread" and it might surprise you to know that not everyone follows the machinations of BC(or Ontario, for that matter) HS track as closely as others. But, clearly, we all know more than we did since you went into your defensive stance.

Scott, Clearly I have struck a chord here. It was not my intention to take personal shots at any of the coaches on this board but more to give my perspective on the current situation. You coming out guns a blazin when there was no direct attack makes me, and i'm sure a few other members, less inclined to take your posts seriously. Clearly you believe that you have a wealth of knowledge and you should be sharing this with us, not making it a point to hunt me down for sharing what my opinion on the subject is.
p.s. Of course i'm going to remain anonymous, that is the nature of a message board. And with the anger you seem to harbour over trivial things such as highschool kids questioning your predictions or sons ability (yes i have read the BC highschool thread), I would not want you to have any idea of who i am for fear of you coming to get me.
