is it unreasonable to say that at international championships the pressure for athletes in so great that it would almost be a good idea to hypnotize an athlete and program them to either relax or even to perform better... karle luis in an interview explaned how he would put him self in a state on the startline that would enable him to compleatly ignor everything and only react to the sould of a gun, not saying thats hypnoses but thats just adds to possibility what if you could hypnotize some one and tell them to run a cretin time, Possible? or not???

what if you could hypnotize some one and tell them to run a cretin time, Possible? or not??? Running a 'cretin' time would probably be undesirable... But seriously, hypnosis is a state where you become more suggestible. It's all very well to tell someone to run a 20 minute 10k, but if he/she isn't physically able it won't matter whether he/she is hypnotized... A more effective thing to do would be to suggest that the athlete "remain relaxed while running a certain achievable pace". What that dude was probably talking about was self-hypnosis, which is basically just getting yourself into "the zone", where you are completely focussed on the task at hand.

It sounds like something that would be Sick to try out, but it would depend what kind of person you are talking about like a person who isn't a runner couldn't be told to just go and run a phenominal time, but I bet it would calm elite runners down and allow them to run pb's.

It would be a awesome to try out probably dangerus though, if you get some one thats not physicaly capable of running that speed or that duration the will power would be fixed on maintaining it but then the body would start to shut down.. leading to stuff like hart attach and so on on the other hand, if you can get someone thats in peak physical condition and put them under hypnoses and tell them to run a 1:40.00 800m ...hypnoses is all in your mind so if you can get the brain to push at top speed till the body can not go anymore then hypnoses may be successful. the athlete maybe suverly injured after but if he can break a WR then that makes everything worth it.

*sigh*
As far as I am aware, I don't think hypnosis can be used to "tell someone to run a particular time", because that's the end result, not what the mind does to achieve it... I think that hypnosis can only go as far as to tweak certain variable mental conditions like outlook, nerves etc. so that they are more favourable in a racing environment.

I tend to think that self-suggestion, positive thinking and visualization of what you WILL do while racing can help you run faster. Also, when racing against a competitor of equal ability a runner needs to realize that the opponent will have a moment of weakness during the race. This is the moment where a surge can propel one to victory. The difficult thing is to recognize when this moment occurs, to be in shape and ready to take advantage of it and then to put the hammer down. This takes racing experience and serious mental and physical preparation.
