I think a lot of people were like me and the lovely Mrs pq, glued to the idiot box most non-working waking hours (and even some working hours in my case, and plenty of normal non-waking hours, haha) the past two weeks. What were your favourite moments, and why?
Some random nominations, favourites for different reasons:
- Evgeni Pleshenko saying words to the effect that "without the quad, I'm sorry, that's just not men's figure skating" (ironic on a couple of levels, but otherwise just a funny bit of public gamesmanship directed at Patrick Chan and Johnny Weir, among others) - Joannie Rochette skating the short program flawlessly - Clara Hughes skating for bronze in her farewell Olympics - of course, Crosby's OT goal, a picture perfect ending to one of the best hockey games I've seen
Lots of other great moments. Your nominations?

my favorite was Jon Montgomery winning the skeleton. that takes pure guts going down that track head first at speeds exceeding 140km/h and pushing 150.

My favourite has to be the Men's 3000m short track relay. There wasn't a single dull moment on their way to gold!

Agree with the above, and I also enjoyed Ovechkin bulldozing Jagr...talk about passing the torch.

The closing ceremony party @ gossip. Deadmau5 headlined and got 3 autographs. Nearly getting into 3 fights. Granville street and all its chaos. Mealle ricker winning gold. ( and meeting the 2nd place snowcross medallist and getting to hold the medal. Pictures with wolfgang Gartner and taking the liquor bottle from the girl in Crystal castles. Seeing our lady peace for free. The torch relay Seeing K-os in the streets and not saying anything to him(stupid idiots) Going downtown Seeing John montgomery in whistler with a pitcher getting bombed after winning the gold. Mens hockey.. nuff said. Getting kicked out of 2 parrots and then trying to dine and dash waiting in line for deadmau5 at live city and then getting kicked out for having a little sample(50mls) bottle of whiskey.. ya eh? MDMA kids get in but not the track stars. Stealing 3 canada flags Moshing ..all the time! And still finding time to make 90% of practices while going to bed at at least 3am everyday

...Marianne St-Gelais cheering on her boyfriend (Charles) in the crowd I was going to add that one this morning... that was one of the funnest things I saw. She was so freaking excited, bouncing up and down and yelling and smiling! Put a big smile on my face. I'd also add the screw up with the guy DQing rigt before sure gold in the men's 10000m long track speed skating race. Not necessarily a happy event, but interesting to watch a real human reaction to a huge error by his coach. He recovered well after taking the opportunity to cool down.

First the most exciting race followed by the most excited spectator/girlfriend celebration!

Thank goodness Crosby scored the winning hockey goal - love it when a superstar goes down in hisotry
I'm a yank, but think it is better from a historiucal perspective that canada won in OT
Loved Bodie Miller wining bronze, then silver, then gold as each medal was more significant for him versus when an athlete wins gold first and then wins a lesser medal
Ice skating - women's champ ws awesome!

The OT goal for me will be difficult to top in my lifetime. However, seeing the unranked Devon Kershaw finish 5th in the men's 50km classic just before the big game had to be my personal highlight.
Devon's performance(s) felt pure. The way he fought right through the finish in the 30km pursuit as other competitors conceded their loss and cruised across the line; the way his 50 km effort left him, both physically and emotionally, utterly drained. Describing his performance as "gutsy" or "ballsy" just doesn't do it justice.

I agree with you Deekay, it was totally unexpected (at least to me), and to be SO close to a medal was absolutely amazing - worth a medal, frankly, given the normal dominance of Scandinavians/Europeans that is typical in this event. I would never have thought that one of this year's Canadian group could place that well at this distance, sprints maybe. I couldn't figure out (not knowing anything about the sport) how you can go from the sprint (~1 mile) to the 50km, seemed like such a big difference, and then to be competitive as well (I guess Northug was too, but that is expected from the Norwegians in XC skiing). A truly honest effort race, and he did exhibit a huge range of conflicted emotion.

I must say, I was curious as to what the Olympics would be like living out...especially with so much skepticism going in (and especially after the first day).
But man, was it ever an amazing two weeks out here. I was fortunate to have my sister and a couple of her friends out here, and they also provided me with a few tickets to events (women's curling and hockey). What an experience. And being downtown Sunday when Crosby scored...wow.

"I couldn't figure out (not knowing anything about the sport) how you can go from the sprint (~1 mile) to the 50km, seemed like such a big difference,"
There are a few differences between running and skiing that allow a skier to excel over a wider range of distances. Skiing, much like swimming, is a very technical sport, a good technical skier will have an advantage over all distances. As well, the recovery time on the downhills plays a role. Drafting and pack skiing tend to keep the fields bunched up so the best distance skiers still need a very good spring (think bike racing). Consequently many of the good distance skiers do fairly well in the sprints. Although Northug is only one to consistently win in both.
Furthermore the "sprints" are not really sprints, but middle distance races, taking about 3:00-3:30 mins in length. Also the nature of how the rounds held discourages specialization, quaterfinals, semis and finals all in the space of an hour and half, favors the distance skiers since you need a certain amount of endurance just to make it through.

I loved watching most of it... but off the top of my head.
Not having to hear that stupid "I Believe" song. I hated that stupid song.
