According an Angus Reid Poll (also run by the Star) most canadians either support the same level or more funding for the Olympics.
Found on A16 of the Toronto Star (Saturday February 27th)
Q: Should federal funding for the Olympic athletes increase, remain the same or decreased over the next four years?
Results:
Increase 33% Remain the Same 41% Decreased 15%
--------------
The poll of 1,008 Canadians was conducted on Fe. 25 and Feb. 26 and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
Note: Figures rounded Source: Angus Reid Public Opinion
----
My notes: I'm not sure what happened to the remaing 10% but either way this is great news. The fact that 1/3 candaidans would support further funding is a bit surprising to me.
We should use this somehow and the current good feelings everyone has to push this further.

Maybe one day we can send a team world xc again! But I won't hold my breath...

I think its fair to say that Canada is riding a bit of an emotional high at these games with our great success, and the fact that it is a home games. It will be interesting to see whether this support from the general public continues once the games are long done. In the Harper interview on CTV last night he indicated that he thought government support would continue and that he thought Olympic athletes were great role models for healthy lifestyles in general. With healthcare being our #1 cost in the country i think that is a great reason to keep funding athletes. Now who is funded and what sports are covered becomes a whole different issue.

Indeed. Does this support extend to summer sports? Sadly it will all depend on how much money potential donors/sponors can make off Canadian success. If there is money to be made, there will be money to be invested. The emotions of the Olympics will likely fade, as we stop caring about luge and biathlon, likely by the end of the week. Will the accountants behind it all decide that it was worth it to own the podium? That is the question.

...saying they'll support funding and actually agreeing to it are two different things....

Funding for athletes is nice, but I think they should spend the money elsewhere. As a first step they could make participation fees and memberships for sports tax deductible. This has a higher impact to the everyday layman than funding athletes on a national scale.
With the Children's Fitness Tax Benefit we have a system in place for children under the age of 18, but why are adults treated differently? Should we also not benefit from the tax break awarded if we can show participation is weekly activities which promote health? If this system were implemented across the board for all age categories, it would cost the government serious cash. Money which I think should be diverted from funding a select few to benefit the greater many.
