So are we sending senior teams? Apologies if this has already been discussed, my TnF north dedication hasn't quite been up to it's usual standards lately...

I think that Canada is not sending any senior teams, but is sending both junior teams, led by mo speed.
does anyone know if Simon Bairu is going induvidually? He said he was targeting the race and his goal was a top ten preformance after his win at nationals xc

I could be wrong though?

Simon Bairu said something about AC sending him to worlds on his twitter, so I believe he is going.

Thanks. I was under the impression that you had to be the top NACAC individual to go to worlds? I could be wrong though? Yea im pretty sure the Junior teams still have to go through NACAC, I don't know about Bairu though .But Canada won't be sending any senior teams to that even.

In order for Simon to go to World XC championships he will have to win NACACs, and for the junior team they must come top 2 i believe at NACACs, but if an individual on the junior team wins NACAC they've qualified to World XC regardless of how the team finishes.

As tree pointed out, Simon's twitter posts have been pretty clear:
"Officially selected to compete at the world cross country championships! Thank You Athletics Canada."
"@djritzenhein congrats on the win. See you in Poland!"

If its wise to NOT enforce a rule, why do we have the bloody rule to begin with?

I believe that they looked at how well Simon will likely do at worlds and decided there is no need for him to go to NACAC's where he will likely be uncontested.

Congrats to AC on selecting Simon to World XC (assuming this is the case) and ensuring our top senior male competes at worlds. This is a great end result; I am curious how we got there? The NACAC teams are posted and include only Juniors. I checked the World XC selection criteria and don't see any changes since October 20th. I am curious if there was: a) another selection criteria revision that was not posted b) if the (capital, bold, underlined) ' MUST' was not a necessity, but a very strong suggestion (ie travel costs to NACAC didn't make it worthwhile for someone so clearly world class to have to fulfill this criteria) c) some other explanation? Can the final line in the Rationale override all preceeding criteria? Just to be crystal clear, I think Simon should go to Worlds and am very happy AC will make sure this happens. Kudos AC. Having read the selection criteria (and revisions), I am simply wondering - how? SELECTION PROCESS for the IAAF World XC Championships +NOTE - Teams are not guaranteed to attend the IAAF World XC Championships Athletes MUST compete at the Americas Championships March 6, 2010 in Trinidad & Tobago Teams MUST finish in the top 2 among NACAC countries at the Americas Championship in order to be selectable Teams must be deemed capable of finishing in the top ½ of teams at the World Championship NACAC winners at the Americas Championships are eligible for selection on an individual basis if a full team is not selectable based on their competitive readiness and ability to perform at the world level RATIONALE In keeping with Athletics Canada’s High Performance mandate and to ensure that a standard of excellence is expected and achievable by all teams and individuals representing Canada at international events, athlete MUST have a minimum standard to achieve. Winning the Americas Championships is seen as the first step and an achievable team goal. Teams and individuals will be selected to the World Cross Country Championships based on their readiness to compete at the world level. www.athletics.ca/files//NationalTeamPrograms/NationalTeams/SelectionCriteria/2010XCTEAMSELECTIONGUIDELINES-REV20OCT09-EN.PDF

As stated above, I am happy Simon is going and do feel he should be good going. Also, any word on the future of the XC program here in Canada now that we are not sending senior teams? Is the first time we haven't sent anyone?

Ritz not running WXC?
I regret to announce that I am withdrawing from the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. I am very disappointed not to be able to lead the team that will be going to Poland to compete for Team USA. I have had a series of setbacks this winter that have held me back from training at 100%. A nagging injury as well as a stomach virus have caused me to miss training over the past couple weeks and I have not been able get to the level of training that is required for me to be at my best. To reach the goals I have set out for the year, I need to be completely healthy and ready to train as hard and smart as possible.. After talking with my coach Alberto Salazar we decided that it was more important for me to refocus my goals of having another successful track season and most importantly, preparing for a return to the marathon in the fall. I love cross country and I was very excited to represent my country; however this is the right decision for me to have a successful year and continue my development to the highest level possible. We decided it was not worth the risk for me to continue to train through these problems at the expense of being fully prepared for the summer and fall. This was a very difficult decision for me but I look forward to being back 100% and ready to go again soon.
