beta.images.theglobeandmail.com/archive/00481/Click_here_to_see_a_481401a.pdf"The workout depends a lot on the skier and the conditions. An Austrian study of nine recreational skiers with an average age of 63, published last year in the European Journal of Applied Physiology, found average heart rates between 60 and 80 per cent of maximum." Any of the west coast types that risk their running by skiing have any thoughts on the HR study results?

This is a biased sample group, because everyone is in fantastic cardio shape! Seriously, though, I'm interested to hear coldneck (and anyone else)'s take on it. As an aside, more related to running: FSU study finds that pre-run stretching worsens running economy and reduces speed for distance runners. sweatscience.com/?p=602

Finally vindicated for my years of railing against stretching!

You'll be the first to know if I find a study on the effect of pre-race slow-motion calf-stretching lunges on race performance, Matty.

Hutch-- Newsflash! Lunges are drills, not stretches!

Downhill skiing is similar to biking in the sense that your effort can vary a lot. You can stand on skis and slide down a hill just like you can sit on a bike and put very little effort to pedal down the street. The thing with downhill skiing is that you spend much more time sitting on a chairlift than actually skiing. An hour of skiing is really like 40-45 minutes of sitting and 15-20 minutes of skiing.
