Check out a brief glimpse of our training session on Saturday, JANUARY 9th. Shorts and t-shirts were evident. One more good reason to come to Victoria to train and compete.

Not bad Victoria! But then CALGARY has been 11 degrees twice in the past week and never lower than 7 degrees for several days. AND, when it isn't quite so balmy, we move inside to our 450 meter track - where there is NO accumulated water on the inside lanes like Victoria has! go DINOS!

Easy Prairie Folk - easy now...woooooow now. Your prairie 11 & 7 degrees highs are little oasis during the winters, little teasers - even if El Nino gives it to you for the duration of this winter - you will again freeze - you have had - 35 after all.
Where for us coasters, we have never had and never will have -35. 7 or 11 is normal for us. If it becomes -35, hell hath frozen over too. Hell! Iqaluit is only -28 tonight. What could you do at -35? Parcheezy? Thought so.
We love our rain forest...sorry....no need for indoors.

roller ski, i hope. there isn't going to be an excessive amount of snow at 11 degrees celsius, and i'd hate to think of what would happen to your bases otherwise

Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island 2.5 hr drive from Victoria is always in the top 5 Mtns in North America in terms of snow fall quantity. One year we had the most in the world. Currently there is about 8 feet up there. Often it will go to 12 feet or more. The temperature in Victoria needs to be 9 degrees or cooler, for it to snow at the bottom of the runs on the Mt. Any warmer it rains and we can lose 100 cms in a day, but gain it back in 2 or 3 days of snow. I have been up there for 5 day stretches and in those 5 days we have 5 distinct days, from blizzard to sunny and calm to rain to fog....last year I snow-shoe raced and we were experiencing an 'inversion'. So the cold air was at sea level 2 degrees with cold fog and it was 18 degrees on the mountain. I raced on several feet of snow in my shorts. Age group wins gets a beer award. I drank my trophy.

Amazing!!! I'm in Orlando, Florida and recently we had several days where the HIGH temperatures were 47 - 52F which I believe converts to 8 - 11C. I may need to move to British Columbia to warm up!!!

I think Vancouver Island is much like New Zealand, so I have heard, never been. And in regards to the quantity of snow up on the Mt. Yesterday the mountain got 1.5 feet of snow and now the base is 299cms or 10 feet basically. It is raining so hard here, right now my car is clean - then you know it is raining!! So I think there may be another couple of feet up there in the next day or so.

yet, in 2009, on quick glance: 6 of the top 7 men's 1500m times came out of cold ontario...or 7 of the top 8 5000m times (albiet, several listed as ONT don't train in ONT, but they also don't train in VIC)---
maybe there is something to the cold that makes athletes stronger, tougher? Or, by virtue of the conditions, makes them stay away from speed until the spring, causing a longer aerobic build-up? Maybe, there is something to be said of the horses brought out of the barn, chomping at the bit, in the spring thaw??? Didn't Paul McCloy train through some hellish winter conditions out east? -- he did "pretty good" didn't he?

He trained out here too. Oh I think running in the snow has it's muscle benefits and all that, but I am talking lifestyle. Currently I am on my chaise lounge with a dark lager in one hand a barbeque tongs in the other - in my Hue Heffner smoking jacket.

Didn't Paul McCloy train through some hellish winter conditions out east? -- he did "pretty good" didn't he? Oh, steller, quit trying to stir things up --- oops, too late, you already did. Climate is, of course, only one factor in development of distance runners. I know you are not really saying that we should move all of our top young distance runners to the worst places to train in Canada, just to make them "tougher". I seem to notice that "tough" runners come from all sorts of different areas of the globe, and not just from areas of snow and ice, yes? And if they originate from areas of snow and ice, they seem to try and spend the winter months running somewhere where the footing is better, as they can afford it... And as far as straying away from good aerobic conditioning, just because your weather permits it, is absolute horsefeathers. The key is good coaching, especially at the post-collegiate / emerging elite level, an area where we are really struggling on the West Coast these days. Put a DST in Victoria, and watch him work his magic....which as you and I both know is not magic at all, just the right goals and the right approach, and the motivation to create the proper environment for such development.

Ron -- you are completely right...a few red wines on Friday night, after a long week at work and I thought I would try and offer a different (jaded?) perspective.
I think I remember reading a quote from Lydiard at some point saying "Champions are everyone, you just have to motivate with the right training and compeition"-- or something like that (Wetcoast can probably correct me).
You are right...with the great coaches in the world, there is no specific magic, no "magic" workout. It is the entire program (from periodizing, to lifestyle, to emotional support, to climate, to training partners, to perspective, to a hundred of other things) applied over months/years that is the magic.
Actually, I was also trying to open the door to any good McCloy stories...
cheers, Trent

I have dozens of good McCloy stories. Someone should write a book, or better still make a movie....(you'd have to see it to believe it . I have some good coverage of Paul on VHS from many years of C.C. trials - now if I only I knew how to convert it to disk.

As it happens, I've been very seriously contemplating a McCloy biography for a while now. I can't imagine a more enjoyable writing project (more beers and stories with Paul himself, plus some extended research time on the Rock.) Paul is a friend, and I had the distinct privilege or being one of his competitors during his prime (although one that he never lost any sleep over!). Paul, if you're lurking, I'll be getting in touch soon! This has to happen.

I bet even at -35 the Dinos get more than 5 guys coming out to practice. I can`t believe this one didn`t provoke a reply! I guess I'll offer up a reply First there were 7 guys at practice 2 just didn't get filmed because they were doing different workouts. I took a precautionary day off due to a minor injury, which is now healed, being as it's january I didn't see any need to push through it. two guys are just returning from injury/illness and were not ready for a track workout. another guy had a test in the morning and did the workout in the afternoon. another guy is in Vancouver so he most likely did the workout there And finally are post/pre collegiate group did a workout at beaver lake. So ya it was a small turn out (maybe smallest of the year) but it is definitely not the norm to have 7 guys at practice. Usually we have around 15 guys out. On day when everyone is on the track we have around 20.

There should be an A/V department in your neck of the woods that will do it.
