did you really go through all his facebook pictures, find this, and create an entire thread on it? come on haha, he's a university student just like anyone else. i don't think he goes through a pack a day or anything.

yes he smokes, and michael phelps uses drugs, and can you believe it, tiger woods cheats on his wife...we're all human

The picture was from high school. He may or may not have stopped smoking since then. Either way....
He ran 3:38 and 13:25 last year... what have you done?

Im not sure the object of the thread was to question German's ability or him as a human being. I actually think the pruprose behind this thread was that he is such a good runner, and thats why it was found surprising that he smokes. |

He's only smoking hookah, when you run the times he does then you can judge. He's obviously doing something right.

So? Michael Phelps does it too. They are people who happen to be athletes, not the other way around. As such, any decision they make, however negative it may be, is theirs alone to make.

Bill Rodgers smoked cigarettes in the couple of years in between his College running and when he became a serious runner again - he was a pretty useful runner I hear.
Gelindo Bordin smoked cigarettes even while being a serious runner - He managed to win an Olympic marathon title, so some have gotten away with it.

I can't wait for the day I can say that German Fernandez wouldn't lap me in a 5km -- that is, if that day ever comes.
The guy is a baller. I doubt he's more than the most casual of smokers and if he's not, I don't really care as long as he keeps adding accomplishments to his already prodigious running profile. I wonder how many people on this message board have smoked at least once .. I haven't, but it's probably a fair amount.
