Hello Folks,
I am looking for some anecdotal information based on your experience and perhaps even some medical advice from some of our health & wellness professionals who like to peruse the boards here.
Presenting Symptoms: pain in the area underneath the right forefoot, shifting sensation occurring in the same region during the plant phase of the foot strike and a corresponding shifting sensation immediately following when the foot loses contact with the ground.
Doctor's Diagnosis: No stress-fracture (X-ray only, no bone scan). Compression syndrome between the third and the fourth metatarsal.
Doctor's Prescription: Visit a podiatrist for custom cast orthotics and a metatarsal pad. Once the orthotics are in place, no time of will be required.
Since the podiatrist could not see me for about 2 weeks I have since been using three 1/8 inch toe-spacers between my third and fourth toes in order to create a 3/8 inch seperation in order to help spread out the metatarsals. I went from limping while walking to literally, going for a 30 minute run--pain and symptom free.
The big questions for you all: How long does compression syndrome take to heal? Is my compression syndrome likely to heal while running with my makeshift toe spacers? Are these orthotics & pad really necessary? (They are certainly cost prohibitive for situation--$400--since I am a student and I was just laid-off from my primary job).
