The (Victoria) Prairie Inn Harriers "A" team includes Jon Brown, Steve Osaduik, Jim Finlayson, Richard Mosley, Kris Swanson, and Kyle Jones... Several of the PIH big guns such as Simon Whitfield and Scott Simpson aren't on the list, but that's a pretty solid team...go, pih ! It's pissing rain out here tonight, so the conditions should be fun tomorrow...

Some quick Masters' 10km times  Overall, the times look relatively fast for the Jericho Park course, compared to previous events there, especially given the rain over the past week. Was the 2km loop the same as used it multiple BC, Canadian & NAIA Regional championships between 1998 and 2005ish? |

There sure seems to be a lot of Island runners and teams up near the front end of those races. How did all the "throwing down" work out - any bragging rights?

Yes, Jon gets to brag, we got to watch. Some were closer than others! I was more or less an other, but a race I was pleased with. It was an incredibly fast race and perfect C.C. race conditions, sunny and muddy in parts

Race was shorter (unless they added distance on that 180 degree turn off the startline)...
They put up cones which cut the corners ~850m in... normally the course follows the gravel trail but they just blined for woods on the grass... probably cut a pretty big chunk per lap.

I raced the course with my Garmin. For the women's race - I have 5.9 km.
I can't speak to any of the other races though. It appears as though each 2km loop was 50 m short or so. I'm assuming the 10 km race was about 250 - 300 m short. Just an estimate though.
And the 1 km loop was likely pretty short, based on what people have told me about their first split times. So the 5 km and 7 km races would have been affected.

Makes sense, thanks Illwill. I was thinking back to BC Cross in either 2000 or 2001 - the Juv/Junior race (I remember some of the results mainly because I was in the race - at least for the first 400 meters of it . Back then it was still 6km Juvenile and 8km Junior - none of this 7km business. Kol Hendrikson won the Juvenile race in just around 20-flat, with a lot of the top 10 guys at BC High Schools running in the 20:40-20:50 range (Nick Sebastian, Matt Scobie, et al) ... the Junior race was won by quite a large margin if I recall, by Richard Mosley in 26:06. |

Question for any Islanders: Prairie Inn is located in Victoria I assume? They seem to have members from all over the province. Do they have satalite training groups? or do they just happen to have members that dont live in Victoria anymore?

There is a combination of factors at play. There are club members who leave Victoria and feel a sense of loyalty, so we have members all over BC, Canada and a few scattered throughout the world. There are some members who have never lived in Victoria, but somewhere in and around Vancouver and race here on the island for PIH, but for their Vancouver club when racing on the lower mainland.
There are some visiting athletes who get comped and driven around etc in exchange for running with club...but just the odd random and rogue athlete.
There are 500 +/- members at any given time and that many more at my guess who are moved away or don't run or switched clubs who come and go....I am not sure how accurate all that is.

Prairie Inn is a fascinating template for what is possible in our sport. As Bomber has pointed out, Bob Reid is the "point man" for the Prairie Inn Harriers, and has assembled a club that offers unconditional love and support, from beginning joggers to International athletes. Bob has given generously of his own time and money, and helped to raise money for top athletes from Victoria, the Island, and the rest of B.C. A lot of the top mainland distance runners compete for PIH because Bob and the PIH have been supportive when others haven't.
Bob and I played Little League Baseball together in Esquimalt, a suburb of Victoria, well over 50 years ago, and have been friends and mutual supporters ever since. Check out the PIH website sometime, and you will be amazed at the content there. The membership list alone is worth reading --- it's a virtual who's who of current and recent top level distance runners in B.C., and with guys like Jon Brown and Richard Lee and others developing outstanding groups, who will mostly run for PIH, this is only going to get better....Well done, Bob !!!

A lot of retired athletes also choose to support PIH by being members, as well as current elite runners ---- youth development is more or less left to the schools, clubs, Universities and colleges...
