Ha, that's a pretty good article. I like this line: When he mentions he's a competitive marathoner, the reaction from non-runners is almost always the same. “They usually assume that I live like a monk, shun alcohol, dine on tofu burgers and boiled yams and go to bed every night at 9 p.m.” Mmmm, boiled yams. (And hey, while I'm at it, I'll mention my article on the same page, about whether different running surfaces affect your injury risk. Many of you know that Jim Finlayson is not only the Beer Mile Record Holder, but he was also a medallist at both CIS and National Cross Country Championships, and a 2:18 + marathoner, and a good guy. Interesting article, ahutch. I know that Lydiard liked his guys to be able to do some good "primarily" aerobic running, even during their base phase, and so he came up with a firm rubber soled shoe, that he said would do a good job of shock absorption on pavement. I still like the trails for most of the running, even risking the occasional ankle twist.
