i wasn't there (competing, but watching a bit) but hosting 1993 CIAU track champs at the skydome would have to cited as a glorious moment for the CIAU!!
(esp. b/c Windsor won!!)

Thanks for posting that great picture and story. Rob Swartz was a true "bear" Indoors --- incredibly tough runner. The picture must be from the 1500 metres, with Jeff Shiebler running in what appears to be 5th place. Schiebler is, of course, the fastest ever Canadian at 5000 and 10000 metres. Others in that photo are.....

Others in that photo are..... That's Randy Moody of Lethbridge in second on the inside and Tom Bima of Manitoba in fourth on the outside. If nobody comes up with the guy in the middle I'll have to look up the results. Rob now runs the IDA Pharmacy (and ice cream counter) in beautiful Bentley, Alberta. Stop in and say hi next time you're on your way from Sylvan Lake to Rimbey!

I know the guy in the middle --- and many others do as well... Even Bomba knows who it is, but he is not allowed on this thread...

btw, if you are using results to try and identify runner # 3, do not use the CI results from that year. The pic. is probably from CanWest, and probably in the ButterDome. And runner # 3 is probably a teammate of Schiebler's...

I heard that Paul McCloy had an epic victory in 1981 on a Lethbridge course that had to be dug out and was still essentially drifted in but I don't really know the details, if someone could clarify that would be appreciated, I'm sure that given it was McCloy, what would be urban legend with another runner might just be a walk in the park.

Yes, it is the Butterdome in Edmonton, and the mystery runner is indeed the legendary Al Klassen. Al was the CIS Indoor Champion in the 1500 metres in 1990/1991 and 1993, and he still holds the CI Indoor Championship Record of 3:46.85. It must have been a bit confusing in 1991 when Klassen finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 1500 at CI's. That would be Al, Henry, and Darren. I wonder if anyone from the Klassen families has done any genealogy, and discovered a common ancestor who could run like hell !!! Al Klassen was also a 1st team All Canadian in Cross Country (as were Henry and Darren), and Al went on to run a very nice 3:39.39 outdoors.

Klassen also had a legendary national outdoor senior 1500 championship win.
A fine gentleman.

No, 1981 in Lethbridge was a very nice fall day, as I recall... Paul McCloy beat a fine group of runners, and many went on to become International runners, either in Cross Country, or on the track. In order of finish, the First Team All Canadians were Paul McCloy/Memorial, Adrian Shorter/Alberta, Ray Paulins/Laurentian, Randy Cox/Victoria, Dave Campbell/Victoria, Bruce Wainman/Laurentian, and Alan Hugli/Queen's... Team score was Queen's-42 / Victoria-42 / Memorial-52. Queen's won the title with a 5th place guy placing higher than the Vikes 5th guy. The Vikes, in addition to Randy Cox and Dave Campbell, were Peter Giannoudis ( a Greek citizen who came over to Canada for a couple of years to learn English) who ran a 2:23 marathon at age 21, Keith Butler, who became an All Canadian in both Cross Country and Track, and ended up with a pb of 3:43 for 1500m., and our '"5th guy" Brad Brohman, who also ended up running 3:43 for 1500m. That was a great team, but Queen's was better, and Memorial was also very good. Paul McCloy, of course, went on to win many National titles in Cross Country and on the track, and could be judged to be Canada's best ever male cross-country runner, placing twice in the top 20 at the World Cross Country Championships, with an 8th place finish in 1986 in Switzerland as his top finish. Paul also ran 13:27.65 and 27:56.9 on the track for 5 and 10 K. Go Newf !!!
