so what's up with the serious drop in times in terms of depth from last year (up front is the same but it seems like all the teams have a lot more talent.. which is good for the OUA)

Based on my training I figured I was in 32:00 shape for a decent road 10km course... If Queen's had been in its usual October condition the times would have been 1:30+ slower. Draw your own conclusions on the depth from that!

I agree the course was in great conditions on Saturday, but last year was pretty similar so I think you can make a fairly good comparison between these past 2 years. But pretty much any other race ran on that course over the past few years would certainly be slower because of the conditions - see OUAs 2008 - and not necessarily because of improvement.

While the conditions may have been fast it is by no means a 'fast course'. It is a great, scenic, oft-challenging grass course with constant rolls and turns that challenges you to get into a good rhythm.
My favorite XC race ever was in '99 at CIS there when it was unseasonably warm, windless and 6 of us flew over the hay bales to break Fonseca's record. Cocksedge was his usual enbeatable self on the grass running 30:51-- still standing record?

Might that be the year the second place team had a 5th man in the 50s? (and like four in the top 20?)

We (Guelph) won without having any All-Canadians. Although our 1-5 split was about 7 seconds.

I was just refering to slamer's comment in the other thread about "certain teams" who came second with a guy in the 50s. I knew that he was that guy.

Yeah, my point in the other thread was everyone elses... being competitive is relative to others. Guelph's highest placer was Steve Bendo at 18th. But there were also 6 guys in 3 seconds, between 18 & 24. Anyway, without Lanny Mann's collapse it would have been a different race. Calgary would have easily won. Fun times really. But oh those hay bails. Bring back that hay.

I was going to post some these same memories from CIS (CIAU) '99, but already mentioned. With a 26-point spread between the first and fifth place teams are there some history buffs who can enlighten us as to other years that had such a level of parity at CIS?

i think Guelph set a record in '99 for the highest winning score at CI's.

Please be cautious not to speak too much of the glorious history of CIS/CIAU Cross Country Running....it will really piss off the NAIA crowd here...

Ron - when midterms are over I'll get on the results Oh and I'll make sure the NAIA/Former-CIS crowd knows how much they got romped in cross at CIS back in the day... jk McInnis - Hay bails eh? hmm... seems like fun, you going to bring some? I think Lakins is looking for some for CIS/FISU and hey can't break the course record if there's no hay bails haha
