Canada's Mason wins high jump gold at world junior championships at 16:24 on July 15, 2004, EST.
Printable version Send to a friend GROSSETO, Italy (CP) - Mike Mason of Nanoose Bay, B.C., won the men's high jump Thursday, collecting Canada's first medal at the 2004 world junior track and field championships.
"I can't believe it, I'm still in shock," said Mason, 17. Mason cleared a personal best 2.21 metres on his first attempt for the victory. Marius Hanniske of Germany took the silver, clearing 2.21 on his second attempt. Tong Hu jumped 2.21, and was relegated to the bronze after missing on two attempts at the previous height.
Mason bumped the bar on his winning jump, causing it to wobble precariously, but it stayed up.
"I felt awesome going into that jump," said Mason. "I carried all of my speed in but when I tipped it I got a little bit worried. But when it stayed I knew that would mean something in the end."
High jumper Mark Boswell was the last Canadian to win gold at the world junior championships, in 1996. Boswell was named to Canada's Olympic team for Athens on Monday.
Mason, who is headed to the University of Kentucky this fall, was in trouble early Thursday, needing three tries to clear 2.10 and 2.14.
"I was really struggling, it was so bad I was in last place at one point," said Mason. "But I started to figure out what I was doing wrong then I started to get that feeling."
Mike Woods of Ottawa was seventh in the men's 1,500 metres Thursday in three minutes 43.35 seconds. Abdelati Iguider of Morocco won the gold in a meet record 3:35.53.
Hank Palmer of Montreal advanced to Friday's final in the 200, finishing second in his semi - and second fastest overall - in 20.81. Jared Connaughton of Charlottetown was sixth in his heat and didn't advance.
Jaime Cruickhank of Saskatoon advanced to Friday's semifinal in the women's 100-metre hurdles, while Francis Keating of Haileybury, Ont., was eliminated. Carline Muir of Toronto didn't advance out of the women's 200-metre semifinals, while Emily Johnson of Guelph, Ont., was eliminated in the heats.
