hey, just flippin thru some old results and came upon this one. i've heard several different stories on what happened here. obviously, it was a close finish, but if you look at the bottom, you will see justin burdon -DQ. i know that he actually won this race, by a fair margin i was told but never got the clear story on why he was dq'd. it seems to be the one of the only dq's occurin at an ofsaa distance final that i could find...
anyone here remember anythin about this one?

I trained with Justin for 5 years, so I know him pretty well. Pretty much, what happened was nothing. We actually still have it on tape. There was a mix of people early in the race and him and Lokinyen made contact, but very little, and Burdon held his position. I think anthony ended up taking a couple of steps in the infield. Justin got DQ'd, but nobody would look at the tape(perhaps this is against rules?) Justin didn't seem to mind, I think he knew he had ran well enough to win. Also, our teammate got third due to the DQ which worked out.

I recall that Lokinyen was one of the big favourites to win that race before the incident in that event. That year he won cross country events such as the Waterloo Open over university competition.
Does anyone know what ever happened to him....... does he still run?

thanks for the info neill.
just to elaborate a bit, i currently run under justin's old school coach at Myer.
what i was told is that they would not look at the tape because it was moore or lokinyen's coach who was in charge and who also turned out to be coach of the junior nats cross country team in which either moore or lokinyen were a part of so thats where the biased came in to play...
not sure though, i can see ppl seein that as hazy but i was told somethin to that degree...

Don't know for sure, but I know Moores coach fairly well. Very nice, honest guy. What ever was the right decision he would have made regardless of the outcome for his athlete.
Hopefully the same could be said about anthony's coach( I don't know him at all). The thing to remember when it comes to OFSAA is that most of the officials/coaches are teachers. I would have to think that they only want what is best for the kids, and not necessarily their own kids but all the kids.
Personally, I have nothing but amazing memories of OFSAA and the people that run the show.

A minor push early in the race? You have got to be kidding me. Now you will have to excuse me because this was a long time ago, but as soon as I saw this post I knew what it was about and I can't believe noone has seen the same as me. Basically what happened was these 2 athletes led the race from start to finish. Then with 500meters left, the events started. I will refer to them as the Niagra guy Anthony. With 500 left Anthony, took the lead, and the Niagra guy reacted by shoving Anthony in the back about 10 times over the next 110m. Now with 390m left, Niagra actually throws anthony off the track. It ws brutal, and anyone who knows me knows I would say most tactics in running are fair game. This was by far the worst act I had seen at OFSAA, atleast DURING a race.
With 390m to go and Anthony on the infield, he came back onto the track only to be thrown back on the infield by Niagra. Anthony then stopped running for about 5 seconds waving his arms wondering whats going on.. Then he cut the track by about 30m, and got back on the track, I felt he should have been DQd for this, but under the circumstances they let him finish. He was now behind and out of the race mentally and really just went through the motions. As for Niagra boy, he finished the last 100m to a a grandstand full of BOOs. I have never actually seen anyone get BOOd at something like OFSAA, he ran the last 100m flaling his arms to the crowd ina kind of, arms wide like a birds wings but hands turned up to the sky, to give you a visual, this was sort of saying is that all you can do, louder I dont care....anyways...thats for your own interpretation. Niagra got Rightly DQd, there is NOWAY anyone can say that it was undeserving.
I have no idea what happened to Anthony after this race.

wud up neill bwoy!
anyway i agree with the boss' view of the events as they transpired. the sweet dr. k has nothing against JB but of course he was smacking him around the track! everyone i know who watched or was in said so...
as a runner who has my share of run ins because of a hazardous running style, i know that little muskrat lokinyen definitely was the instigator in that race and countless others as a result of his style. he bobbed and weaved, jutted and sat relentlessly on guys. one Uof T indoor race was classic as i basically committed assault with the intent to harm (and i'm 5'6 135) throughout the race-and there was no backlash from the 'fans', b/c he was so blatant! honestly, like nothing you've experienced he was that oblivious hope he's doing well, cause it had nothing to do with him as a person or anything, but he was just nuts!
FYI-burdon's went on to have a solid career at boston college running 8:07 and 4:06 indoors

Since I'm out of shape and years into retirement, I don't often frequent these websites. However, I heard through the grapevine that my name was mentioned in this thread. Niell O, Dr. K. - hope you're both doing well. Anyways, I just wanted to clear my name regarding the aforemention incident. No harm was meant during the race. I'm just a very competitive person. Lokinyen was leading the race and I was trying to pass him on several occasions. As the intelligent racer that he was, he continually pushed me out into lane 2 as I tried to pass him. Finally, I got pissed and gave him a shove. I was probably 145 lbs to his 110 lbs at the time, so this shove threw him into the infield. Completely unintentional. Should I have been DQ'd? I really don't know and really don't care. But I just want those who care to know that it wasn't intentional. Lokinyen was a great runner and I'm sure he could have layed the hammer down and sent me the silver medal. Bones, you the man!
