Looks like man exciting event, all abilities are invited to come out and compete. A great way to celebrate Bannisters accomplishment and a chance to meet some of the legends of the sport in this country. This event has attracted international attention being highlighted on the IAAF website. Here is the info.
On Friday, June 18th join some of Canada's track and field legends (Bill Crothers, David Bailey, Bruce Kidd, Grant McLaren, the Craig brothers, and Paula Schnurr as they pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of Bannister's epic mile. The Cambridge Classic Mile promises to be an engaging evening of middle distance running. The competitive highlights will be the high school championship, masters, and elite races beginning at 7:00pm. All participants will be racing the mile - the theme for the day is "Four laps that can change your life". To enter one of the many heats, please register on-line at www.runforlife.ca We welcome all participants regardless of age or ability. There are no race day entries so please enter asap. Racing begins at 4:00 pm with grade school heats.
The Cambridge Classic Mile is being staged at Ontario's oldest school on a re-surfaced clay track (cirac 1954). A minumum prize purse of $4500 will be awarded to the elite runners with cash bonuses based on performance.
Following the race will be an awards ceremony followed by a reception at the Best Western Hotel in Cambridge.
Other highlights of the evening include the shooting of a documentary film - this 15 film will be distributed to schools that take part in this event. The goal of this event is to encourage, develop, and showcase our outstanding talent. More infomation is available on-line at www.runforlife.ca
