Roger Bannister a british medical student became the first man to break 4 minutes for the mile on May 6, 1954 at Oxford. He accredits his achievement non suprisingly through his knowledge of physiology, bannister claimed that he drew a training regime centered clinically.
Many rumours to discredit bannister's achievement are buzzing through the message board threads all over this crazy continent. Rumours of accounts of sub four minnute miles in the 1700's (see letsrun.com).
What makes his Bannister's accomplishment so grand, is that people claimed sub 4 is impossible for a human being. Such attention grew to this feat, which is why we still talk about it today. However a sub four minute mile now-a-days isn't all that-grand. Many talented runners have tackled this barrier, even highschoolers. With world leading marks ranging in mid 3:40's has to make you wonder.............
Whats next?

CBC radio did a little story on this....Although I didn't get to hear any of it. It's nice to know it is something that is still remembered.

Runners' World hadd a great article on the 4 minute mile.. I believe it was last issue or the one before. It talked about what they think the limit of the human body is for the mile. One guy said "3:45".. and was then informed that the world record is already 3:43. lol. It's a really great article, I encourage everyone to read it.
