whats the deal with them only having an open three thousand, there should be a chance for some of the younger guys to run a fast time too, the only people in this race were in grade thirteen and a couple of grade 12s.
What about the elevens and the tens, they dont even get a chance to run up against the other guys

just to clear that up; it was not an "open" 3000m. it was an invitational event. only those athletes invited by the meet officials were permitted to run. this is also why the top six athletes in the men's and women's 3000m had different prizes that the other events. this was the only race at the meet where prizes to the top six were sponsored by nike. you'll notice in the girl's event it was won by a grade 11, and other younger athletes were invited to race (sara leo of birchmount is only in grade 10, although she did not compete).
hopefully this explains to you why younger athletes may not have been in the men's race.

I was told that, in order to get in to the race you must have finished in the top 5 at an ofsaa event. the year I got invited was the year after I had won ofsaa... I was in grade 11 but I believe there have been some grade 10s to run it... I'm guessing they want the top quality runners in the race. Therefore stopping people in Grade nine to compete... I don't know if I'm correct on that you have to have finished in the top 5 at a previous ofsaa but thats what I heard

the invitation goes out to runners in the previous ofssa xc who placed up to something like 20th in their age group
there were plenty of people invited this year but not many raced
sometimes a coach can arrange to have you entered

I'm actually not sure they use criteria as objective as that. Al Baigent is the meet co-ordiantor and I think he just looks at the results and invites who he feels will run the best highschool 3k. As some of you might remember they invited simon bairu for one or two years. If your coached talked to Al you could probably get in If you are capable of running around or sub 9-minutes.

I've heard that the invitation goes to the Top 10 at OFSAA Sr. XC, plus a select few from Junior OFSAA. Coaches can also try and get there athletes in if they've run around 9:00 minutes indoors but weren't in the Top 10 at OFSAA.
