I have just recently heard that there is a new ofsaa event for females. This event is the 1500m steeple chase. Who do you think would take on and place well in this event?

Oh yeah my guess would be Laura Ecker from beamsville. She is pretty good at long distance, and she did amazing last year at hurdles. I think she would come top 3 in this race.

when did they deside to make this race? have they been talking about it for a while or was it just a spur of the moment type of thing?

There was some talk on TnF last year about a girls steeple being added. Check out: www.coppsindoor.org/They have the schedule for OFSAA track this year and the Girls steeple is included.

I forgot to mention that the girls 1500 steeple will only have 5 barriers, unlike the guys who have 5 barriers per lap

An interesting side note... it looks like they dropped the senior boys 110 hurdle height down to 36inches (was 39 I beleive) and they shortened the junior boys 110 hurdles to 100 hurdles... interesting....
also a few changes in the junior boys throwing events, but I have no idea what they used to be...
These changes are probably a reflection of the loss of OAC... that's my thought at least...

I forgot to mention that the girls 1500 steeple will only have 5 barriers, unlike the guys who have 5 barriers per lap wow, i can't believe they are having so few barriers. that really takes away from the challenge of the event. anyone know where exactly they're going to have the barriers? the best way i can figure is having the first barrier as the water jump (assuming they're keeping that) some 550m into the race, then having the next barrier on the top of the first curve. the more i consider only having five barriers, the more absurd it seems. i can appreciate making compromises for women (lower height, shorter water pit), but removing 2/3 of the barriers doesn't make sense to me.

Catts your right it doesn't make alot of sense only having 5 barriers. Does any know how they would set that up...Maybe skipping the water jump on the 1st or 2nd lap or something.

Sorry.. I just want to clarify.... The part about Hurdles being the only technical event (with the exception of steeple) should actually be read 'the only technical TEXT event with the exception of steeple' Sorry for any confusion...Not intended to disrespect the HIGHLY technical field events.

Just for clarification the meeting I went to yesterday afternoon said that the women's steeple would have 30 inch barriers, they did not state a specific number I assume it will be the same number as men. Also the rumour was that OFSAA will begin keeping to sets of records the old ones and now new ones with the new age structure.

As a steepler myself I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of girls steeple in High school. This is my last year and I am glad it got added this year and not next year. There has been talk about adding this event for a few years now. The only reason the held back on adding it was because very few facilities had adjustable barriers. Most facilities had barriers that were the mens height but could not adjust to the girls. But over past few years facilities have been having to replace old and worn out barriers and there for buying adjustable. My argument was always 'If you never have girls steeple as an event then people wont buy the adjustable barriers. Why would they spend more money for adjustables if they will hardly ever get used. If you start to add the event to big meets then they will be forced to buy adjustables' I don't know if I quite believe the part about only 5 barriers. My father is my coach and is conveining two of our first highschool meets and he has yet to mention to me anything about there only being 5 barries. Maybe he just isnt aware of this yet, but I doubt what was said is true. As for who would be in this race. I know that Claire Percival runs a very good steeple (2nd at nationals last year inthe steeple) but I don't know if Claire will run the steeple or just the 15 and 3. Kelsie Slater would also be in the top 3 if she ran this event, but she will only be running the 15 and 3, as she has a chance to do very well in those events. I don't know how else is running. I know I'll be in there. But, Who else is running?

I actually just checked out the ofsaa website..'5 in total' that it...5 barries....why are they even bothering to add steeple then...We may as well just run the regular 15. does anyone know why there is only 5 in total???

wow. now I'm upset that I'm not in oac... I always wanted to do a steeple race... the boys steeple race sounds like more fun! I mean, isn't it all those crazy barriers that make steeple different? I agree... with only 5 (shorter) barriers, the race is going to basically be a 1500m

where exactly on the ofsaa site does it say 5 barriers only? I looked and couldn't find any information about the 1500 m steeple.

I could be totally wrong but this seems like it is clearly a typo, there is no way there will only be 5 steeples.

judging by claires 1500m i think she would do better if she ran the steeple. her steeple is strong, she could win and record in it, that would be nice. i think top 4 could go: 1) Claire Percival 2) Laura Ecker 3) Maggie Lynch 4) Miranda Galloway

So 5 steeples, right? In 1500m? On a 400m track I don't understand how 5 steeples can be spaced in order to only steeple only 5 over 1500m... with 3 and 3/4 laps, if you only ran 1 steeple per lap that's a max of 4, and if you ran 2 every lap that's way over 5 (depends on whether you place it on the first 3/4 of the lap or not). I'm not a steeple runner myself, so could someone please clarify for me where these steeples will be placed in order to only run 5 over 1500m?

GREAT NEWS!
The women's steeple needs a boost and OFSAA will take care of that. It will get more competitive as the years go on. The main problems for girls will be finding an adjustable water barrier to practice on.
I recommend building one (30 in) and practice jumping into a sand pit. I am sure there are some track dad's out there can do it. My dad built me one.
Also US colleges will look for experienced steeplers. It will increase your stock if you can run good xc and steeple.
I will be at OFSAA and I am excited to see you girls get after this event. Good luck!
