Gary was leading through 400m. It looks as though Berhanu may have been DQ'd for causing Gary to not finish the race. I seen the results as soon as they came up and Berhanu had an official time. It has been changed to DQ now. Too bad for Gary.
Sullivan had better luck and moves on to the final. Nice photo finish here.

So those splits make Lagat about 2:56, 2:37 and 2:23 for his 1000's. That is absolutely nuts to close like that. I assume the last 400m or so would have been crazy.

One would think that your last lap would be quicker than 57 seconds when running a 2:23 at the end of a 3k when your previous km was 2:37...Unless he surged hard a ways out?
57 + 57 + 28.5 = 2:22.5
Where did you find that his last lap was 57?

bubba,
i listened to the BBC's live feed, seb coe said it.
if the last 1000m would have been slower i am sure they'd have gone sub 55/54, but because they were moving so hard over the last 1000m and 800m's, they didn't really chnage gears that much on the final lap. silva worked really hard to try to pass lagat after the bell, and had to run the whole curve wide. lagat held him off while staying controlled, and silva was too spent from running wide to try to come back at him over the final 150m.
