Hi everyone,
Jay Cantin made the trip back to his alma mater (U Mich) to watch the men's indoor big 10 champs and sent a few reports to a few of us. Seeing as there are a few Canadians down there, I thought I would post'em here for people's interest:
Cheers, TRENT
BIG 10's REPORT #1:
Willis was sick to watch. jogged the mile to make it on. then not long after won the 3km. Wisconsin boys took it out like they should have (4 guys with 8 mins or less credentials).. bairu pressed at the front early, and then tegencamp (spelling). willis sat in 3rd or 4th until the last mile and then followed tegencamp. With a lap to go willis was still wiping his nose and still jogging as tengencamp was hammering for home. As they approached the bell willis nearly ran up and into a lapped u of m runner. coming out of the curve willis had taken the lead. by the middle of the next curve the lead was 30meters. then he shut down and coasted it in for the last 50. a final lap of 26.75. He seriously only ran about 130meters of that last lap. Wisco bouys packed it in very well .. maybe 2nd-5th. They ran hard. i think solinski was flat out on the track after. bairu ran hard and fell off the pace early about 5-8 meters down at the 1/2way. here are the splits. 30.5,32.6,32.7,32.7,33.56,32.2,32.4,32.3,31.8, i began taking willis splits because it was evident that he was going to make a sudden move - 31.79,32.1,32.1,31.9,30.96,26.75 (7:57?)
Willis's ease left everyone in awe - including sully.
Next up dmr. ellerton (already qualified in the 800) sat in 3rd/4th leading off the 1200. the plan was for him to go with 300m to go. ellerton splits 30.7,31.7,30.2,30.3,29.8,27.4 ... 3:00.32 he blew away the other lead offs to the crowds delight.
50.8 400 leg he got walked down by minnesota guy . kid went out in 22.7 (and paid for it! he was a little horny!)
800m Dan Cooke 1:52.9 53.18 split. held on for 2nd.
1600 - Brannen down 10 -15 meters to a 4:06 miler from minn. 28.59, 29.8 (had gained no ground), 31., 30.7, picked up less than 5 meters, 32.26, 33.24 (sitting on minn guys shoulder, but indian was now in the race and took the lead.) 31.34 nate on indiana shoulder.. 27.59 to blow past the indiana kid.
Brannen looked good. Ellerton not quite as smooth but had it when he called on it.
Interesting thing to consider. Would webb be on the DMR if he was still at u of m? ellerton 1:48.1 800 split, nate 3:57 mile, willis 7:44 3:56.
BIG 10 REPORT #2:
mile. willis was once again awesome. similar staregy. last until the 800. move up as solinski went to the front to hammer home from 600 out. willis once again looked amazing. he is in another world compared to these guys.. with 200 to go he went by just before the turn .. he didn'tlook as explosive until the back stetch and the lead was about 25 m. i figure it didn't look ass good because the wisconsin guy was running sub 30pace as well.
willis splits : 34.0,32,32.0,31.9,30.19,28.66,29.41,25.87 he shut down with 10 to go and raised his arms - looked very smooth and controlled. since they ran a mile i walked the splits up each lap.. so they are slightly over 200m except the last lap. 4:04 final time
800. brannen wire to wire. this is faster than his ncaa winning time last year. and for those who have seen the track at michigan know that the corners are tight and the surface is not all that fast. 25.91,26.34,27.01,28.29 1:47.74 track record . looked good ran hard. Matt L from penn state was never in it. iwas hoping for a 1,2,3 ontario sweep. ellertrton looked a little flat. ruff mich. was looking awesome until the back stretch. ellerton ran closer to 'even pace' than anyone in the race, 1:50.8 there was no question that nate was going to win after the first 100.
5km tegen. bairu shared the lead.. simon looked much better than last night. keller and lockhart were never a threat. state kid fell off at aboout 3km/.. wisco boys put on a nice show.
4*400 nate # 2 handed off to ellerton # 3 legs. 48.15 nate to walk down ncaa outdoor champ adam steele from minn. nate made up 3-5 meter atleast passed him on the home stretch, 48.15. " ellerton 49.45. lead off leg was 48.8...... 47.61anchor. fun to watch two skinny sorry I mean to be more PC..... 'streamlined' candians runnng the 400s!)
peace,
the jaybird.
