And well deserved. What a great leg he ran to get the vikes into the lead. Did I hear the track announcer say he ran 1:51 for his leg?

It would make sense. He appears to be physically incapable of running slower than that with a baton in his hand. I'm too lazy to go dig up the post, but I recall somebody last year at around this time laughing at me when I said UVic would win a fifth without Martinson. In light of all the hockey talk that was going on here last week in that other thread...it's like the 1990 Oilers! ;D When I first read this post I was going to reply that 1) UVic didn't win the 4x8 with Geoff in his first year and 2) All I ever heard out of certain team members was that Dan was so much bigger and stronger than most other 800m runners that he was an ideal lead-off runner who would always get to the front because he would always win when it comes to jostling (plus he's fast). Then I realized who rl was (sadly it took a few minutes even after the hockey reference). I guess I too, am wondering if a school (or even an individual) has been part of a winning relay team five years in a row (or even a cross country team for that matter).

That's not even a fair comparison, as OFSAA is inevitably the most coveted title of them all. I too always find myself comparing any great sporting moment to OFSAA. "Yeah, so you know how Canada almost lost to the States in hockey? If that would have happened, it would have been like Hughes losing to Moe back in '07."

St. Mike's in late 80s, early 90s won 5 OFSAA xc team golds in a row (midget up to senior). Brad Young, Alex Vernon (I think)...I forget the other guys...someone help me out...

And Jeff McCabe, too?...that was the second time St. Mike's did it then, wasn't it? Was there a McConnon who was part of the first group? Tom?

Although I agree that OFSAA doesn't really belong on this thread... that first St. Mike's team that journeyman mentioned probably also had the Fortier twins (later of Queens and Dartmouth), and maybe Paola Frescura (later of Penn).

Due to injuries or "double midget" Alex Vernon and Brad Young were the only two who accomplished it..your right Hutch, those other guys were on the team, but were injured during one or two of the five years...

He won 43 in a row. Edwin Moses, on the other hand, won 122 races in a row in a streak that lasted a decade (1977-1987) in the 400 meter hurdles.

Back to the topic...What Dan Mallie has accomplished in the 4x800 is amazing, five gold’s in five years…There is nothing more to say, that basically sums it up... On top of that he has to be one of the greatest people I have ever had the chance to meet. Comes off a little shy at first, but once you get to know him he is a great guy. I had the opportunity of being one of his groomsmen at his wedding last summer, and as someone who watched him progress thru high school in my track club and now thru university it still amazes me how much he hates doing dishes for other people. It’s really too bad he sucks so much at settlers of catan, or else he would be the ultimate weapon...
