There hasn't been much substance on here lately, so I'll try to raise a topic of interest. For the middle distance runners; what have your early season workouts been like? Anyone had spikes on yet? Did you do some form of time trial at the end of cross country to assess your shape? I have always liked a 3k TT the last week of Dec to give an indication of fitness.

Iv always done some speed to get your turnover going and to see where your fitness is at too. A few 600's usualy do the trick I dont usualy go over the 600m until later in the season because I dont see a point in running a hard distance race indoors.

I did a 3k TT after CIS then took a a week off, then a week of recovery runs, then I have been doing lots of longer slower miles outside similar to a base before xc, and i'll probably start hitting the track in the new year a little bit. Still doing 3 workouts a week, but mostly tempos and some hills noting to speedy.

I've mostly been doing tempos, fartlek and hills. The only stuff that I've done on the indoor track thus far is circuit training (i.e. strides). But I probably will be starting up with indoor intervals shortly into the new year.

Even during Cross season, in the spirit of Peter Coe (Sebastian Coe's coach and father) we do some speed stuff. 10 x 200 or something, outdoors, once a week or even twice to keep the legs turniing over fast. Presently we took a few weeks off of distance stuff but are back to the base stuff with the addition of more speed work for indoor.
