New NCAA Men's Top-15 Rankings From LetsRun.com www.letsrun.com/2009/rankings1005.phpquote: 7. Wisconsin (4) - Wisconsin is a work in progress, but trust us they'll be good despite getting trounced at home by unranked Syracuse and previous #10 Georgetown this weekend. Landon Peacock and Craig Miller are not race ready yet (Miller faded really badly after front-running most of the race), Reed Connor is really good and ran unattached and freshman Mohammed Ahmed may be really, really good. He beat Colby Lowe and some other really good runners this August, setting a Pan-Am junior record 14:12 in Trinidad & Tobago and is yet to compete after observing Ramadan. Wants to follow in the footsteps of fellow Canadian and former Badger 2-time NCAA CC Champ Simon Bairu.

New NCAA Div 1 National Rankings XC: Men www.ustfccca.org/assets/rankings/div1/2009-xc/09-d1-mxc-national-week3.pdfWomen www.ustfccca.org/assets/rankings/div1/2009-xc/09-d1-wxc-national-week3.pdfAlso: Story on Mohammed Ahmed at Wisconsin: www.uwbadgers.com/sport_news/mxc/headlines/story.html?sportid=195&storyid=19247Living the fast life Madison, Wis. Adjusting to college life for a freshman doesn’t always come easy, but for Mohammed Ahmed, Madison feels just like home. Mohammed was born in Somalia but moved to Canada seven years ago and he is now one of the freshmen in the UW cross-country team. Once in Canada, Mohammed started training more frequently and excelling in running. This improvement came because he fell in love with the sport and most of all the inspiration that came from his former coach, something really important for him. Mohammed says that he decided to come to Wisconsin because of the relationship he developed with his current coach Mick Byrne. “He always made me feel very good about coming to Wisconsin, it was like almost talking to a friend,” Ahmed said. “He also has great experience and he has been helping me a lot so that makes me feel like I’m in the right place too.” Madison now feels like home to him but in a day in the life of Mohammed, there is some thing he is definitely missing: his mother’s food. Mohammed fasted for a month when he first moved to Madison this summer due to his religion and the adjustment was “one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.” Back home, Mohammed was able to eat with his family during the night and fast all day, but since he was in Madison this year during Ramadan, he had to take care of it on his own. “The first few days were really hard, but Coach Byrne understood that I couldn’t train as much as everybody else because of it and I’m glad he supported me all the way.” Now that the month of Ramadan has ended Mohammed just spends the day like any other student-athlete that is adjusting to the first year of college. He usually wakes up at 8:00 a.m., eats breakfast (now that he can eat) and goes to class. In the afternoons he practices with the team and works out at the track. “Right now I’m just focusing on catching up to get ready to race at the course. I’m really excited about our next meet in October.” When Mohammed was asked what he liked most about UW-Madison the answer was too easy. “I just love the city, have you ever gone for a run by the lake?" Isn't that John Paul Malette from Assumption. I know he as well as Trent S and JRae all went to ND this year and it lists him as a freshmen. Unless ND has another freshmen by the same name Malette is Canadian

Letsruns' insight on Ahmed
"Then there is the X factor, Mohammed Ahmed of Canada. A true freshman, Ahmed is a super-talent but got a very late start to the season thanks to August races and Ramadan. Chances are Ahmed is going to redshirt, as Wisconsin will have enough bodies besides him to 1.) win Big Tens, 2.) make Nationals and 3.) finish in the top 10 without very many top-level upperclassmen cross-country runners. With him running well, we think they'll be very, very good, as Ahmed may be the most talented freshman in the country, by far."
couple Canadian racing at Big Tens.

Looks like the same situation for Kendra as in pre-nats ... she goes out very very hard and fades badly (i.e. badly in this sense is that she does not win ... not a total hit the wall and blowout).
You would think her coach would say a few words to her on even pacing? She can beat Nichol Blood (1st place finisher) ... (fyi she beat Jordan Hassay in this race also).

Interesting I figured Mohammed was going to redshirt this season ... although Wisconsin cleaned up at Big 10 I think regionals will be a different story. www.uwbadgers.com/sports/m-xc/recaps/110109aaa.html"True freshman Mohammed Ahmed finished in fifth place in a time of 25:21, earning first team All-Big Ten honors. Ahmed was the first freshman to cross the finish line, adding Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors to his resume. Ahmed is the seventh Big Ten Freshman of the Year in UW history and the first since Brandon Bethke claimed the award in 2006."

Mohammed has started showing brilliance in that "pack of harriers" in workouts .He was like a kid with ice cream just waiting to wear a BADGER uniform and he did and ran well. The whole group was told to "stay back for the first 5 km.At a mile he was WAY back in 66th or so.He moved up well but utilized too much anaerobic threshold from 6-7.2 km.A great collegiate premier run but most important he loves Wisco'the guys, coaches etc. and has a great support group @ Wisco.Terre Haute shall be interesting but Regi0nals shall be a hold--back patternfor the team. Then its off to Guelph
