I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on the elevation change at this event.

I am just curious, I am sure it is nothing like the sporting life 10K in Toronto. From what I have heard it starts out fairly quick then there is a challenging part mid-way through the race?

Sorry if there is a similar thread like this in the past.

hey ap

there is a slight drop from start to finish, but there is enough hills inbetween that it really isn't a huge factor. the first mile is very fast - then it flatens out. just before you hit the 5k point the hills start with the big one over burrard bridge (that is the first one), there are a couple of rolly hills next and then in the last mile you have to climb up and over the cambie street brigde and then it is a fast last 500m's into the finishing line when you come off the overpass onto the finishing stretch. never ran the sporting life 10k, but i think that one is just downhill the whole time.

I've run both courses several times, and there is no comparison between S-R and S-L. I don't consider S-R and aided course at all. I've only run the new (non-Stanley Park) S-R course as a master, and the best I've been able to manage is a 30:26, in what I consider to have been a very hard and solid race. I ran S-L in 29:33 at the same age, and was doing it more or less as a tempo run. S-R may have a drop, but it's all in the first mile, and there's only so much time you can gain in a mile, even if you're free-falling; and the rest of the course, as krody suggests, often takes it all back anyway. The S-R course is "aided" by downhill in roughly the same way the Boston Marathon course is aided-- which is to say, not really.

Yes I agree with the SR Course assessments from both Kristina and Steve. For what it's worth, our athletes seemed to usually run 20- 30 seconds faster at the Sun Run, than at the TC 10K in Victoria.

last time i checked, sporting life drops about 80m while sun run drops about 25m. so neither are legal road races (i think 1m per km is allowed).

...hey ronny...notice the amount of guys who ran good races (better than sun run times..ala swanson, macdonald, etc.....) at the TC this year when it was before the sun run.........hmmmmmmm.......

Yep, I did notice that bomber, and as usual, you make a good point. For those who didn't know, the Sun Run has traditionally been either 1 or 2 weeks before the TC. Again, the TC times can be quite weather dependent, as a lot of it is out and back along the waterfront, and quite of bit running into the wind can occur. Having said that, I understand it was quite windy this year, and the times were solid. Of course, the bigger the pack, the less the wind will affect any one runner, other than the leader. I understand that Simon Whitfield did quite a bit of the leading into the wind, as he just started to run a hard race...
Can you confirm any of that, Bomber?

Aside from the entertainment of a great field of elites battling out the win, I'll bet there's some great carnage to watch for in the 40-50 minute range when literally thousands of people are reaching the finish.

Grown men sprinting home to not get beat by children, people throwing up on themselves, etc.

ronny......wind in your face on the way out...

FYI.....my take has never been that the TC is an easy course, but rather the 'provincial' attitude people took towards comparing the two courses. The Sun Run is not an easy course, despite the negative drop. The drop is entirely done in the first km and then after that the course is both slow (longer uphills and steep downhills as opposed to the other way around, with the one steeper section just before 5km) and not easy (the steeper downhills bang up your legs pretty good, especially down the bridge after 5km, whihc makes the last 3-4km a grind).

...in comparing the two courses, from a legs beaten up perspective, I found the TC easier....., but not knowing the course beforehand (longish uphill around the 5km point) made for some poor strategic/tactical decision making....

I was just thinking, as I was watching the Triathlon coverage, that we should be trying to get that same level of coverage for events like the Sun Run.
Migawd, 50 or 60,000 people running through one of the most beautiful Cities in the World.
What's not to like about that? Does anybody know if there will be any TV coverage, either live or delayed, like next weekend or something? If not, there should be...
